Personal devices are becoming such a significant risk on trading floors that they can no longer be ignored.

Mobile phones, which used to be simply for making voice calls, are now fully connected and versatile devices that put all the power of a computer in your pocket. Most of us cannot imagine life without our mobile devices. With the power of ever-smaller microprocessors, smartphones have completely transformed how we generate, consume, and share data about ourselves and the world around us.

While regulators and risk and control professionals continue to sift through traders' emails, chat rooms, voice records and trading records for elaborate compliance and surveillance measures with a fine-toothed comb, personal devices are seeping back into trading floors more than ever.

Because regardless of the numerous cases of market abuse involving burner phones, regardless of the regulations in place, and although smart devices provide a convenient gateway for blatant cybersecurity breaches, monitoring personal devices on trading floors remains a paper-based compliance exercise.

Less than a week ago, Facebook and Ray-Ban unveiled their first generation of smart glasses. Smart IoT devices are becoming more common, and while the technology behind these powerful gadgets is amazing, are we fully aware of the inherent security risk they pose on restricted trading floors?

All smart devices including the latest Facebook/Ray-Ban smart glasses are interactive and connect to a network. Without appropriate security measures, personal devices give easy access to MNPI and other confidential information, enabling market abuse. This has been exacerbated by the shift to hybrid working and by the fact that mobile devices now account for 54.8% of global internet traffic.

Financial services, as a high-risk sector, are particularly vulnerable, with incidents increasing 54% in the early 2020s compared to the same period in the previous year. Perhaps we should gain some understanding and visibility first as to what the actual status of all personal devices on trading floors are and establish their normal behaviour so we can become aware of what abnormal behaviour looks like.
