Meet Jess āļø

5 months ago, Jess joined Sokada as one of our Digital Marketing Executives and started her digital marketing apprenticeship. A lot of her job involves getting our clients’ content planned, written and live, then keeping an eye on how it performs. With a photography degree behind her, she was always going to feel at home on client shoots, though she is just as happy in front of the camera as she is behind it.

When she isn’t working, she is usually out for a run or meeting friends for coffee. She also fits right in with our version of team building, which tends to mean a trip to the pub or being locked in an escape room together.

We asked Jess 5 questions so you can get to know her a little better:

What did you want to be when you grew up?
ā€œIn primary school, I always said I wanted to be a mad scientist with crazy hair, believe it or not.ā€

What is your favourite drink?
ā€œAn iced caramel latte with oat milk.ā€

Which round would you choose in a pub quiz?
ā€œI guess music but I’m terrible at pub quizzes so I’m probably better off as moral support.ā€

Which reality programme would you be worst at?
ā€œProbably The Traitors. I’m really gullible and I laugh when I’m lying so I’d be found out immediately.ā€

What is your favourite thing about working at Sokada?
ā€œDefinitely the people. Everyone made me feel so welcome on my first day and helped me settle in so quickly. It’s been so much fun since!ā€

5 months in, we’ve learnt two things. Jess is much better at digital marketing than pub quizzes and we should never recruit her for The Traitors. Really glad you’re part of the team, Jess!

Your homepage headline could be costing you enquiries.

Even when it sounds perfectly fine.

Take a dog trainer, for example. ā€œBetter behaviour starts hereā€ is not a bad headline. It tells the owner what should improve but not why that matters to them.

ā€œEnjoy walks againā€ is more specific. Now they can picture a Sunday morning without their dog pulling their arm out of its socket. The service is the same, but the reason to enquire is clearer.

When you look at your own homepage headline, ask yourself:

- What gets easier?
- What frustration disappears?
- What can they enjoy again?

It matters for search too. Your page title helps someone choose your result on Google. Your main heading helps them see that they have reached the right page. Both need to clearly explain what the page covers without reading like a list of keywords.

Now read the headline as someone who has never heard of your business. Would you understand why the service should matter to you?

We’re a family-run web design and SEO agency in East Sussex, and this is something we help clients with every week.

Some of the best lessons at work are the ones you hear again and again until they become part of how you approach everything you do.

These are five things Jude and Julian have taught us at Sokada, particularly when it comes to marketing, design and learning how to make better decisions for ourselves.

Think about why you’re doing something, rather than just doing it because it’s on the list. If you think something isn’t working, speak up and say why. Do your own research, take the initiative and don’t be scared to try something to see if it works.

And when it doesn’t work, learn from it rather than seeing it as a failure.

They’ve always encouraged us to have our own opinions, question things and keep learning as we go, which has helped us become much more confident in the work we produce.

Five simple lessons, but ones that make a big difference.

We’ve all done it…

You’re having a completely innocent little scroll through someone’s Instagram, your finger slips and suddenly you’ve liked a post from three years ago.

Unlike. Immediately.

Crisis over?

Not necessarily.

Instagram may remove the like from their notifications inside the app, but if they have push notifications switched on, your name could already have appeared on their phone.

So the real question is… did they see it?

Another useful piece of Instagram knowledge you may wish you’d never learnt.

We recently had the chance to hear Davina McCall speak at a Big Business Entrepreneurs event, and what a woman.

She was a little bit mad, completely lovely, full of energy and, true to form, she overran because she had so much to say. But I think that was part of what made listening to her so brilliant.

When you look at someone as successful as Davina, it is easy to only see where they are now. The career, the confidence, the success and that huge smile. What you do not always see is everything that came before it.

Davina has always been very open about the difficult periods in her life, including addiction, personal tragedy and more recent health struggles. She spoke with such honesty about the things she has been through, without pretending that life has always been straightforward.

And yet she is still so positive, so warm and always seems to have that enormous smile on her face.

It was a really good reminder that success does not mean someone has had an easy journey. Sometimes the people who appear the strongest have had to fight incredibly hard to get to where they are.

Funny, open, slightly chaotic and completely inspiring.

What a woman.

This one went off with a bang. A bright new website for Frontier Fireworks.

Frontier Fireworks have been putting on professional firework displays across the UK since 1996, and their new website makes it easy for customers to explore those displays, browse and buy fireworks online, and find the right option for any occasion.

Professional firework displays for public events, weddings and parties, an online shop for buying fireworks, and a trade section for the industry are all brought together in one simple, easy-to-use website.

The design keeps their bold, confident feel throughout, and everything is easy to find, whether someone wants to book a display, buy fireworks or get in touch. A website that looks good is one thing, but what matters to us is one that works hard for the business, turning visitors into enquiries and orders rather than people who just have a look and leave.

Looking for a new website that actually brings in work for your business? Get in touch with Sokada and let’s talk about your next project.
