There is now just over a week until the kids return to school, so my choice of reading this morning was particularly well-timed.

The UK's Ofcom has published an online letter to social media companies demanding they clean up their act. Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson also intervened, saying tech firms "have an obligation now" to "deal with" material that incites violence."

One significant issue is that tech companies, including Elon Musk's X, have drastically reduced their tech resources to boost profits. Since Musk's takeover, 50% of the workforce has been let go. This has led to severe consequences, such as infrastructure crashes during high-stress situations, like Elon Musk's online chat with Donald Trump, significantly impacting online safety.

So, they will resist investments to effectively moderate their platforms, citing free speech when they mean a free ride at everyone else's expense.

This article from the BBC illustrates the positive side of the AI revolution, in this case providing tools that are helping neurodiverse individuals to be more effective in their working life.
Actually the really exciting thing about Artificial Intelligence isn't the big things it will be capable of, it is the tasks it can help us with now.
For instance my daughter spent a couple of hours most days over half term working with an AI tutor, a win win as it was not only educational but she actually enjoyed it so it kept her out of mischief.
My copy of Microsoft Copilot is helping me with blogs and is helping me to sound personable and engaging, me being an IT geek this is particularly challenging.

This week, I had the opportunity to see firsthand just how frustrating it is to deal with an account hijack.
The customer contacted me, as one of the retired partners had unfortunately been victim to a hijacked personal email account.

The hijacking was discovered when spam was sent from the compromised account, some of which was directed toward the retired partner’s old company.

It wasn't difficult to work out how the account had been compromised the passwords were too simple and anyway we shouldn't just rely on passwords to protect our data.

Stolen passwords are the most common cause of account compromise. Compromised accounts are often used in phishing campaigns and to send spam.
