Remember when Huawei were everywhere?

The P30 Pro was arguably the best phone of 2019. Mad periscope zoom, brilliant camera, battery that went on for days. Then they just vanished off the shelves.

Here’s what happened:

In May 2019 the US blacklisted Huawei, and Google had to cut them off.

The US government claimed Huawei’s kit posed a national security risk because of its links to the Chinese state, which Huawei always denied.

It sat in the middle of a much bigger US and China trade row, and phones were the collateral.

The timing was brutal. The ban only hit phones released after 15 May 2019, and the P30 Pro launched on 26 March. Seven weeks earlier. It slipped under the wire and kept full Google support. Everything after it didn’t.

And losing Google isn’t losing a couple of apps. It’s no Play Store, no Gmail, no Maps, no YouTube, and no way to easily add them back.

The Mate 30 Pro landed here at £899 with none of it. Brilliant phone, couldn’t get your banking app on it.

Huawei did try one last thing.

In 2020 they re-released the P30 Pro as a “New Edition” for £699, barely changed, purely because it was old enough to still legally come with Google. Which tells you everything.

If you’ve still got a P30 Pro or older, nothing’s changed.

Those phones keep working and keep their Play Store access.

They just became the end of the line.

Bit of a shame really. The cameras on those P-series phones were ahead of everyone, and they were pushing Samsung hard.

They got caught in something that had nothing to do with the phones themselves.

Still see the odd P30 Pro come through on occasion and they’re still a very good phone.

That little notification telling you a software update is ready is easy to ignore. Most people do. Here’s what’s actually happening when your phone updates and why it matters more than you might think.

1. Security patches are the most important part

Every update contains fixes for vulnerabilities that have been discovered since the last one. These are weaknesses that, without the patch, could allow someone to access your data, your accounts, or your device remotely. This is the single biggest reason not to put updates off. The longer you wait, the longer you’re exposed.

2. Bug fixes you never knew you needed

Underneath the headline features, every update quietly fixes dozens of small issues. Apps crashing unexpectedly, battery draining faster than it should, connectivity problems, keyboard glitches. A lot of the niggles people put up with day to day are often resolved by an update they haven’t installed yet.

3. New features arrive through software, not just new hardware

You don’t always need a new phone to get new capabilities. Apple and Samsung regularly add meaningful features through software updates. Improved camera processing, new accessibility tools, changes to how the interface works. Your current phone can genuinely get better over time if you keep it updated.

4. Performance improvements are real

Manufacturers optimise how the operating system runs on your specific device with each update. This can mean better battery efficiency, smoother animations, and faster app loading. An updated phone often feels noticeably snappier than one running old software.

5. Older software eventually becomes a problem

Apps are built to work with current operating systems. The further behind your software falls, the more likely you are to find apps that won’t update, features that stop working, and eventually apps that won’t run at all. Keeping your software current keeps your whole phone working as it should.

Bluebell here. Big day tomorrow apparently, something about Calatech & Coffee, so I’m told to remind you all.

Here’s the deal from the humans. Pop into the studio, grab a coffee, and they’ll give your phone a clean and a fresh screen protector while you wait. Free, no appointment.

Bring whatever’s been annoying you. The battery that doesn’t make it past brekkie or the crack on your screen from where my fellow dog friends knocked it out of your hand. We’ll take a look and tell you what’s worth doing.

Or just come and say hello to me. I’ll be the one supervising.

Friday, 10 til 3. 21 to 27 Hollands Road, Haverhill.

See you there. Bring dog biscuits.

You’ve probably clocked the new iPhones by now, and it’s all about the back.

Apple’s given the Pro its biggest redesign in years, so I’ve broken it down so you can see what’s going on and which one’s worth your money.

The Pro’s swapped the little square camera bump for a big bar across the top. And underneath, Apple’s dropped the titanium, gone back to aluminium, and added a vapour chamber to keep it cool.

That’s basically a tiny sealed pocket of liquid inside the phone that spreads heat away from the chip, the same trick gaming laptops use.

That’s not just for looks. It shifts heat far better, so the phone can run flat out for longer without slowing down. If your old iPhone ever got hot and laggy while gaming or filming, that’s the bit they’ve fixed.

So which one’s for you?

For most people, the standard iPhone 17 is the best value in ages. It’s finally got the smooth 120Hz screen that used to be Pro-only, plus the new front camera. The two things you’d actually notice day to day, now on the cheaper one.

The 17 Pro is for the tech fans. Faster chip, the vapour chamber cooling, and a proper telephoto with up to 8x zoom.

If you push your phone hard, that’s your one. The Pro Max is the same with a bigger screen and the best battery life of any iPhone yet.

They’re the best iPhones Apple’s made in terms of specifications and features.

Just buy the one that fits how you use your phone, not the priciest on the shelf.

Would you like to see another redesign for the iPhone 18? Or do you like the new look?

P.S - we’ve got the 17, 17 Pro and Pro Max in right now if you fancy a look before you decide. Cheaper than Apple, 2-Years Warranty, and lifetime support included.

Samsung’s JUST dropped its biggest foldable shake-up in years, and if you’re a Samsung user, this one’s for you.

Two new Folds landed at Unpacked this week.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the flashy one, Samsung’s first ever “Ultra” foldable, super thin, huge 200MP camera, and that annoying crease down the middle is all gone.

Then there’s the standard Fold8, the more interesting one. Samsung’s changed the whole shape, wider and squatter, more like a little tablet when you open it out. Lighter, and a touch cheaper than the Ultra.

Here’s the bit for you though.

If one’s caught your eye and you’re thinking of upgrading, don’t let your old phone sit dying in a drawer, and don’t just take the first trade-in number some website offers you.

We buy Samsung, and pretty much everything else.

Whatever you’re upgrading from, bring it in and we’ll give you a fair price, paid the same day (more than your network will offer you too!)

Search your model on our website’s sell tool, and we’ll tell you what it’s worth in less than 30 seconds.

Calatech & Coffee is back next Friday, and the kettle’s on from 10 til 3.

It’s pretty simple. Drop in, grab a coffee, and we’ll give your phone a clean and a fresh screen protector while you’re here. Free, no appointment needed.

Fair warning on the clean. We’ve seen what lives in the bottom of a charging port and we’re no longer surprised by anything.

Bring the phone that’s been annoying you.

The battery that’s starting to give up on you.

The storage that’s somehow always full, despite the 4,000 near identical photos of your dog being absolutely essential.

Or the old one sat in a drawer that you’re not sure is worth anything. *Spoiler, it’s usually worth more than you think*

We’ll take a look and tell you honestly what’s worth doing, including when the answer is nothing.

That’s the point of it really.

Friday 31 July, 10 til 3. 21 to 27 Hollands Road, Haverhill.

Just turn up. See you there.

Harrison, Fausta and Dan the man.
