How can you tell if an email is a ‘scam’?

1. Look at the email address of the sender – a lot of scam emails will look legitimate initially as they mirror large company’s branding, but in almost all cases, the email will come from a free email service like Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail, and there isn’t usually a bizarre string of numbers either.

2. What information is the sender requesting? – Your bank would never email you to request sensitive information like a password, pin or card number, so you should always be wary of emails asking for any information that is private or personal.

3. Look at the images – a legitimate company email will usually have high quality images and the correct company logo.

If you receive an email (or even a phone call) that you aren’t sure about, leave it alone and head to the official company website where you can log in securely and check for any messages or issues there.
