So, customer messages me to say he's been having problems with his computer crashing, or at least the graphic card drivers crashing and reseting etc. After speaking to an "IT" guy, and I can only presume he wasn't, the guy told him it needs the latest drivers and charged him for this privilege (way to much aswell!). It didn't work. So customer took it to a Computer Shop. The result - "We've stress tested your graphic card and it gets way too hot, so you need a new one - that'll be hundreds of £ as they're difficult to get currently", indeed they are difficult to get, but that was the only part that was true.
So, after chatting to a few more people, he heard of me. And these photos are the graphic card I speak of. Firstly, there is no way in its current state would I stress test it as its highly unlikely to be able to keep cool.
So I told the customer the first thing I'd do is remove it, take it apart, clean it all up, repaste it and then lets see what happens. So, (annoyingly I didn't take any after pics 🤦) now all clean, it happily sat in the stress test for many hours, without reaching any silly temps, and nor does it crash/reset. A very simple fix and very low cost to the customer. This seems to be becoming more and more common and worryingly gives all us IT guys a bad name for the few that do this kind of thing.
Maybe its the result of Covid? pepole struggling to earn a living so obtaining money any way they can? I've seen more and more scams on the Facebook marketplace with people paying money and not getting anything, or stuff not working etc etc.
Conning people out of money is wrong! always! I am always honest to my customers, if I cannot do a job, I will say so, if possible I will attempt to recommend someone who I know can. If I visit a house and its a 5 min simple job then I'm happy for a couple of quid for fuel and maybe recommend me to friends/family/Facebook groups.
Rant over, sorry 🤣
