✳️ Perfect for Bronze/Silver DofE Skill. Courses cost £195.00 (£65 x 3 monthly payments). As an educator working with children for the last 20 years in computer technology, I’d often get calls from parents asking if I knew of anyone that could help their child to touch type. The fact was, I couldn’t even touch-type myself, so aged 45, I decided to take the plunge! My mission was to create a touch typing course that was perfect for children. I didn't want a course where children were just left on their own to 'get on with it' because I knew from my own experience that this methodology just doesn't work. So I decided that every student should have their very own personal touch typing tutor supporting them throughout the course. Our tutors help them to feel confident and motivated to succeed. Kids are using computers more than ever; they are never more than a few paces away from a keyboard. My mission is to get every child learning to touch type; it’s not a desirable skill - it’s an essential life skill.

🏃‍♀️ THE RUN

And finally… the run 🏃‍♀️

🏃🏾‍♂️The run takes place on grass and for adults, it's 3 laps of the field (3K).

🏃🏻‍♀️Each time you complete a lap, you’ll collect a wristband from the far side of the course. Once you’ve collected three wristbands, you head straight down the finish chute.

🏃🏻‍♂️Cross the finish arch, soak up the cheers and collect your well-deserved medal.

🏃🏿‍♀️You can run it all, jog it, walk some of it or mix it up, it all counts. Everyone is cheered on, and everyone finishes.

🏃🏿‍♂️For many people, the run is where it really sinks in that they’re doing a triathlon, and that feeling at the finish line is something really special.

Why starting now really matters (without panic)...

Starting now doesn’t mean doing loads. It means making a start, doing a little bit each week. This will help to avoid that crazy last minute panic. It's something I see, and it's not ideal; for anyone.

By starting now, it means our students with access arrangements can get comfortable using a laptop as their normal way of working, not a last minute fix (which just doesn't work).

We have a variety of touch typing courses to help students get started. One to one lessons or hybrid learning. Whatever works; we can make it happen. Do get in touch.

"They can type” isn’t the same as exam-ready!

A lot of parents say, “They can already type, so they’ll be fine, won't they?”

Some come for assessment hoping that they are fast enough. Very few are.

For short bits of homework they can get by. But exam typing is different because they have to type longer answers under pressure and keep their ideas flowing.

If a student is still hunting for keys or correcting lots of errors, typing starts to become a hindrance to their thinking. It holds them back. Before long they've forgotten what they want to say. The end result is that their answers are not a true reflection of what they are capable of.

Exam-ready typing is crucial to success. It isn’t just about typing fast. It’s about typing feeling automatic enough that it doesn’t get in the way.

Access arrangements & exam confidence: why preparation matters!

It's that time again when I reach out to talk about getting ready for typing in exams. Because leaving it until the last minute is stressful for everyone.

When a child is approved to use a laptop for exams, it’s a really positive step.
But it doesn’t automatically make exams easier.

Because having access to a laptop and feeling confident typing under exam conditions are two very different things.

I work with a lot of students who only really start using a laptop properly in Year 10 or 11. Often just months before GCSEs. They can type, but it feels slow, effortful and stressful, especially when time pressure kicks in.

Typing in exams is a skill in its own right and students need time to practice and embed the skill. So if you have a student who has an access arrangement in place or are thinking about using a laptop in exams, they should start learning to touch now now!

Please do reach out if you need help with this.

One of the most common things I hear from parents and teachers is,
“They’re on screens all the time, so typing shouldn’t be an issue.”

On the surface that makes complete sense.

Children are very comfortable with technology. They’re confident tapping, swiping, logging in and navigating platforms. But using a screen confidently and being able to type accurately and fluently are actually two very different things.

Most children learn to type by watching their hands, guessing keys and getting by. It works for short tasks, but when writing becomes longer, timed or more pressured, that approach can start to fall apart.

That’s usually when we see tired fingers, slower work and frustration creeping in, even though their ideas are there and the understanding is solid.

Typing for schoolwork and exams isn’t something children just pick up by accident. It’s a practical skill that needs to be taught in a structured way, just like handwriting is.

Once that foundation is in place, confidence, speed and focus, becomes much easier to build on.

One of the things I notice most when working with children who use laptops for schoolwork and exams is the huge effect that time pressure has.

They often know exactly what they want to say and if you asked them the question out loud, they’d answer no problem. But when the answer has to be typed…the thinking starts to race ahead while the fingers struggle to keep up.

That’s when confidence can really wobble.

It’s not because they don’t understand the work, but because the typing element is taking up too much headspace.

Finding keys, correcting mistakes, keeping an eye on the clock, all of that competes with thinking and getting their ideas down.

In exams on a screen, that extra load can make a huge difference.

It isn’t about making children type faster as quickly as possible.

It’s about helping typing become automatic enough that it stops getting in the way, so their focus can stay where it needs to be - on the question in front of them.

The good news is that typing is the kind of skill that responds best to calm, steady practice over time, not last-minute pressure.

January always feels like a good time to pause and notice how things are really going, especially when it comes to learning, screens and the skills children are quietly expected to have.

So over the next few posts, I’m going to share a few observations from working with children who use laptops every day for schoolwork and exams.

Does this sound like your child or a child you work with?

🔸They’re bright and they understand the work, but as soon as a laptop is involved, everything seems to slow down.

🔸Homework takes longer than it should, typing feels tiring and ideas that flow easily when they’re talking can get lost while they’re trying to find the right keys.

With more schoolwork and more exams now happening on screens, that gap can start to show, especially when time pressure is added.

Many children are assumed to have picked up this skill along the way, but are rarely taught properly or systematically.

January is actually a really calm, sensible time to notice this and to start building confidence quietly and steadily, long before summer exams come along.

I’ve just finished reading Baz and Raz, written and self-published by my friend Alan Blank.

It’s a genuinely warm, engaging story designed for children aged 8-13. It’s such an endearing story and a great read (even as an adult, I loved it!).

At its heart, Baz and Raz is about the tightness of friendship. Two boys growing up in a children’s home, facing change, uncertainty and bullying, and relying on each other as the one constant in a world that doesn’t always feel safe or honest.

What I really loved is how the story shows that good things can come from sad beginnings. It doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, but it handles them with hope and warmth, and it’s an easy, absorbing read, even for children who don’t usually choose books.

Knowing Alan personally makes the story even more special. He has worked in and around education for decades and, even in ‘retirement’, his passion for children, literacy and inclusion shines through. He understands reluctant readers because he once was one himself, and that empathy is woven right through the book.

If you’re a parent, teacher or someone who loves a great read, this one is well worth reading together in class or popping a copy in the library.

☀️ Alan has also said he’d be very happy to visit schools to read from the book and talk to pupils. If there’s any interest, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll happily pass details on. ☀️

📘 Baz and Raz is available on Amazon.

A lovely book, written by a genuinely lovely person. 👏

Why don't I mind my students talking while they type?

As my student this morning demonstrated, he's pretty good at talking and typing at the same time! We were chatting about my forthcoming trip to Hong Kong and whether I would be flying on an Airbus A350 or a Boeing 777. He was sure it was an Airbus. I didn't have a clue - only that it had wings! Anyway, I digress...

So why is it OK to chat? Well, if a student can talk and type at the same time and their speed and accuracy remains high, it means they are typing automatically, which is exactly what we are looking to achieve.

In this case, my student was able to type confidently, (whilst talking), at a speed of 25wpm and an accuracy of 95%.

There were a couple of times when his accuracy dropped and he would go quiet to concentrate and then pick up the conversation again.

I do love our little chats.

A little reminder for anyone who thinks touch typing is only for SEN learners… it’s for EVERYONE!

I work with any child or adult who wants to type faster, more accurately, and without looking down. Sometimes it’s for exams, sometimes for schoolwork or work, and sometimes it’s simply because they want to feel more efficient on a keyboard.

And you can learn to touch type far quicker than you might think.

Take one of my students who finished her course on Saturday. She’s 14 and just really wanted to learn the skill properly (her brother also had lessons with me).

She completed the full course with 99% accuracy and 45wpm.

And she did it in record time with only 11 × 30-minute lessons (just over 5 hours of teaching!), plus her own practice in between.

We mixed structured lessons with ‘real-world typing’ such as freehand essays, dictation, numbers and symbols so she is ready to use her new skill. No need to revert back to old habits. And her speed of 45wpm is just the start - it will continue to climb.

Such a brilliant achievement!
