We're looking for someone to join the team here at Harpenden Computer Services. 30 hours a week, based at our unit on the Southdown estate.

You don't need a CV full of qualifications — but you do need to be good with computers, genuinely enjoy solving problems, and be the kind of person customers feel comfortable talking to. Knowledge of Apple Mac is a bonus. Willingness to learn is a must.

Had a customer collect her laptop today. Came in with a broken hinge — and a nagging feeling it might not be worth fixing. Wondered if she should just buy a new one. £80+VAT later, the hinge is repaired and she's got another couple of years out of a machine she nearly gave up on. That's exactly why we do this. Before you write something off — just ask. It might surprise you. Anyone else nearly binned something that turned out to be an easy fix? — Paul

Spoke to someone this week who'd genuinely never considered that a 4-year-old laptop could still be fast. They'd just assumed "old = slow," full stop. Not always true. Sometimes, just upgrading the RAM can make a big difference. Sometimes it's just full of junk; it's never been cleaned out!
