If you’re going to penny-pinch on spares, please make sure it’s not power supplies.

They’re far more reliable than they used to be. But at their core, they’re still built on electromagnetic induction — a 19th-century principle doing a 21st-century job.

Solid? Yes.
Proven? Absolutely.
Immune to failure? Not a chance.

And when a PSU goes, it rarely does so quietly — or conveniently.

So do yourself a favour: hold a couple on the shelf. Because when one fails five minutes before a critical call, a maintenance window, or the end of the working day, you don’t want your resilience plan to be “hope.”

Power supply redundancy isn’t overkill. It’s cheap insurance.

Don't wait for a failure to buy your insurance. Drop me a message today and let's get your shelves stocked.

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

For me, packaging is half the battle when it comes to selling used network equipment.
Back in the day, sending kit out wrapped in bubble wrap and foam beads was “normal” — and I hated it. Even then, when networks weren’t quite the board-level priority they are today, it just didn’t feel right.

So we did something about it. We invested heavily in proper packaging, absorbed the setup costs, and redesigned it over the years until we got it right. Painful at the time… but absolutely worth it.

Fast forward to today, and it matters more than ever. If you’re justifying the decision to buy used network infrastructure, the last thing you want is that sinking feeling when the box arrives.

When you buy used (properly refurbished) network equipment from us, it arrives looking like it came straight from an OEM. That’s always been the goal — and it’s how we’ve been reassuring customers for years.

The AI Starter Kit: Data Centre Power. Startup Prices.

The world’s largest data centres are currently refreshing their hardware to support the next generation of AI supercomputing. Their upgrades are your competitive advantage.

The AI Starter Kit pairs these pristine, enterprise-managed NVIDIA GPUs with a compact, modern chassis engineered directly for your team's workspace. It is the ultimate shortcut to scaling your AI initiatives:

• Sourced from the Best: Built using high-performance NVIDIA hardware coming out of enterprise cloud data centre refreshes.
• Pre-Configured Efficiency: Avoid the headache of component hunting and hardware compatibility; it is ready to code out of the box.
• Maximum ROI: Get the exact same heavy-lifting compute power used by tech giants, but priced for growing business budgets.

From the recycling pile to the showroom floor. 🔄✨

This tired old Cisco 887 router has had quite a journey—years stuffed in a cabinet, more years gathering dust on a shelf, and finally rescued from the scrap heap. It turns out it's not quite ready for computer heaven just yet!

One of our corporate clients still has plenty of these little boxes blinking away on their network. Their major refresh project has been delayed, so they needed spare units to keep the lights on. But they didn't want just any spares—they wanted the crème de la crème.

So, I asked our spray team to work their magic and refurbish this one to showroom standard.
The result? The ultimate difference between “plain old used” and “refurbished and proud.” Sometimes, giving old tech a little extra love is exactly what buys our customers the time (and peace of mind) they need. 🛠️

Is buying refurbished IT equipment a smart move or a ticking time bomb? 💣

From my 30 years’ experience refurbishing networks and servers, this is never a simple yes-or-no decision. Much like the image suggests, networks are built from individual, well-understood components—and what matters is how solid those building blocks are, not whether they’re brand new.

The real considerations come down to a few key factors:
• ⚖️ Risk vs. Cost: Balancing the budget against operational downtime.
• ⏳ Lifecycle & Support: Knowing when a component's support status actually matters.
• ⚙️ Failure Rates: Identifying which parts are prone to wear and which are practically indestructible.

Refurbished and used equipment plays a vital role in the IT ecosystem when deployed strategically. There are clear lines, of course: I wouldn’t deploy an unsupported firewall or outdated Wi-Fi access points. However, servers, memory, switches, and routers are proven, stable platforms that can perform reliably for years.

What about power consumption? 🔌 It's a concern that is frequently overstated. Only at a massive, enterprise data-centre scale does power efficiency become a dealbreaker. In most standard business environments, the massive upfront savings of refurbished hardware would take many years to be offset by the minor efficiency gains of buying brand new.

Like building with LEGO, it isn’t about whether the pieces are brand new out of a box—it’s about whether they still lock perfectly into your design.

It’s not cut and dried, but it can always be calculated.

What’s your stance on refurbished hardware in your core network infrastructure? 👇

Sometimes stalling a network refresh — or postponing one — is just a reality of business. Often it’s financial, sometimes the building isn’t ready, or the new equipment you ordered hasn’t arrived.

That leaves two options:
• Buy brand-new “last year’s” network kit from your vendor.
• Or, if you want to get a little old-school, buy refurbished kit from yesterday to see you through until the next delivery.

Network managers did this all the time in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Then, for a while, everyone had money, and few people thought about these tricks… until now. It’s “Back to the Future” for network refreshes.

This little order going out the door is a gap-filler. Sure, the customer could have bought random used kit, but this was a blue-chip client — and when gap-filling, they only accept fully refurbished, like-new kit with warranty included.

We were on the approved vendor list, the only one meeting that standard — and, conveniently, the most competitively priced. Old tricks, done right, still work best.

Happy Tuesday, folks! Today we’ve got a couple of unusual treats for your network-loving eyes.

First up: an SDX WAN Versa Networks CSG1300 device. Not something we see every day! These two little beauties originally came out of the USA, made their way to the UK (probably during lockdown), and now ~~ after a careful search for a second home — they’re heading back to the USA. Sold at around 20% of the original purchase price, they helped the customer save cash and shrink their carbon footprint. Not bad for a day’s work, right?

Next: a rare but fascinating Juniper Networks QFX switch. Long retired, but still valuable enough that the customer wanted a spare to extend the life of their current units. Sometimes, the classics are just too good to retire completely.

Saving money, stretching lifespans, and keeping the planet happy ~~ all in a day’s work.
