On the Bench: Christmas parties booked?

December is the busiest month of the year for mobile DJs, and the worst time for your controller to give up. Three faults to check now:

01 Sticky pads: if they’re sticking now, they won’t fix themselves by mid-December.
02 Crackling outputs: worn master and booth sockets cause crackles and drop-outs.
03 USB dropouts: a worn USB socket can disconnect your laptop mid-set.

After a summer of fields, tents and spilt drinks, these are the three faults we see most on hire fleets every winter.

01: Sticking cue buttons: worn switches that stick or double-trigger.
02:Intermittent connections: worn sockets and cracked joints from being plugged in and pulled out all summer.
03: Jog wheel faults: jogs that drift, slip or stop responding.

Ask an Engineer: DJM crackling?

We’re AlphaTheta’s UK service centre, so a lot of Pioneer DJ mixers come across our bench. Most crackles come down to one of three things.

01 Worn faders: channel faders wear with use. Crackling or jumping means they need cleaning or replacing.
02 Dirty pots: a scratchy EQ or gain k**b is usually grime, not a dead mixer.
03 Drinks: one spill can corrode the boards. Switch off, unplug, and don’t power it back on.

Network, Wi-Fi, CCTV, door access, audio, lighting and digital signage, all installed by one team. Audio by Optimal Audio, lighting control by Lutron, and network and CCTV on Ubiquiti.

Booking AV for your annual conference? Ask these four questions first.

1. Will you test everything in the venue before the day? Kit that works in a warehouse doesn’t always work in a hotel ballroom.

2. Who’s on site on the day, and are they an engineer? When something goes wrong, you want someone who can fix it, not someone who has to phone someone.

3. What’s the backup if a laptop or mic fails? There should be an answer ready before you’ve finished the question.

4. Will you deal with the same person from quote to show day? Details get lost every time a job changes hands.

If your supplier can’t answer all four clearly, it’s worth asking why.

Doors at nine. We’re in at six.

Before the first guest arrives, every mic is checked, every screen is tested, and every presentation has been run through on the actual kit in the actual room.

And when the doors open, an engineer stays in the room until the last guest leaves. If something needs fixing, it’s fixed before anyone notices.

It’s not glamorous. It’s why the day runs.

Nobody remembers the AV at a good conference. Everyone remembers it at a bad one.

The mic that cut out halfway through the CEO’s speech. The video that wouldn’t play. The ten minutes of “can everyone at the back hear me?”

Good event tech is invisible. Mics that work, slides that change on cue, and a room that hears every word. When it’s done properly, people talk about the content, not the kit.

That’s the job, and we’ve been doing it since 1975.

Behind the Rack: Samsung KX, King’s Cross.

When Harman UK needed its own Martin Professional lighting installed at Samsung KX, they brought us in.

We fitted Martin fixtures in the auditorium and along the windows of the glass level between Coal Drops Yard’s two roofs, all controlled through MADRIX.

Off-the-shelf mounts wouldn’t do the space justice, so we made bespoke brackets for the linear fixtures in the windows. We also refinished every Martin MAC in white to match the building.
