Newlands Boxer Tom Browning Wins Gold at The Prestigious Haringey Box Cup
The Haringey Box Cup at Alexandra Palace London is widely regarded as one of Europe's biggest amateur boxing tournaments, attracting hundreds of competitors from across the UK and overseas.
Newlands Gym boxer Tom Browning, accompanied by coach Kipper MacKim and Riley Wilson, produced a series of outstanding performances to claim gold at the prestigious Haringey Box Cup, one of Europe's largest and most competitive amateur boxing tournaments.
Competing in the Senior 65kg division, Browning fought three times over the course of the tournament, demonstrating skill, determination and composure against high-quality opposition from some of the country's leading boxing clubs.
His campaign began with a tough quarter-final against Alston Ryan of the renowned Repton Boxing Club. In a closely contested contest, Browning showed excellent ringcraft and resilience to edge a 3-2 split decision and book his place in the semi-finals.
The following day he delivered arguably his best performance of the tournament. Facing Taran Singh Rai of Leo's Gym, Browning boxed with confidence and control throughout giving his opponent a standing count at the end if the first round and earning a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision victory. His sharp combinations, movement and tactical discipline left no doubt in the judges' minds as he progressed to the final.
With the gold medal on the line, Browning returned to the ring on finals day to face another strong Leo's Gym representative, Jawad Dildar. The championship bout proved to be a fitting finale, with both boxers producing a highly competitive contest. Browning once again showed his ability to perform under pressure, doing enough to secure a hard-fought, 3-2 split decision, which did not reflect Tom’s overall dominance. throughout, however Tom Browning was crowned Haringey Box Cup champion at 65kg with 55 boxers entered athletic that weight.
Winning three bouts in three days is a significant achievement at any tournament, but doing so at the Haringey Box Cup carries particular prestige. The event attracts hundreds of boxers from across the United Kingdom and abroad, making it one of the most respected tournaments on the amateur boxing calendar.

His performances throughout the tournament showcased not only his technical ability but also the determination and mental toughness required to succeed at elite amateur level. To come through a demanding tournament schedule undefeated and return home with gold is a testament to his commitment, preparation and fighting spirit.

Harley Barford also represented Newlands Boxing Gym at the Haringey Box Cup, boxing in the 70kg category. Harley produced a strong and determined performance, showing excellent fitness, composure and work rate throughout the bout. He pressed the action well, landed clean shots and gave a very good account of himself against tough opposition. Although the decision went the other way, many in the hall felt Harley had done enough to win. It was a disappointing result, but certainly not a disappointing performance. Harley can be proud of the way he boxed and the attitude he showed on a big stage.
