Windows 11's January 2026 update is causing significant problems for some users.

Reported issues include a 'black screen' appearing before the desktop loads on Nvidia hardware, a bug that resets the desktop background, crashes in Outlook Classic, and various other problems.

The January 2026 update (KB5074109) is a mandatory Windows update that installs automatically. It updates the OS build to Build 26200.7623 (25H2) or Build 26100.7623 (24H2).

Microsoft has acknowledged a bug whereby Outlook Classic fails to open unless users manually terminate the process through Task Manager each time.

Additionally, it appears that Microsoft has inadvertently broken desktop.ini functionality in File Explorer.

If you encounter any issues, you'll need to uninstall Windows 11 KB5074109 and pause updates. If you need support with this then please call 01422825050 or 01422 525460

Openreach and BT have announced that their plan to withdraw all copper-based analogue, ISDN and broadband services, previously due to complete by 31 December 2025, has now been delayed until 31 January 2027.

Our message to customers is unchanged. While this revised date provides more time — and may now seem some way off — the significant task of moving to an all‑IP, future‑proof service remains.

Customers should still aim to take action now, as the announcement provides only a one‑year extension and we are still likely to experience resource bottlenecks as the deadline approaches.

Prices are also likely to continue rising for legacy analogue, ISDN and broadband services, while meaningful cost savings are already available through all‑IP voice and fibre broadband alternatives. These options also bring additional benefits, including greater flexibility for hybrid and remote working.

The process of switching to all‑IP is straightforward. Please contact us today to discuss a migration plan for your business.

What services are affected?

Anything currently using a copper line. Put simply, every Openreach service delivered over copper lines will be affected. The most obvious services are analogue telephone lines (PSTN) and digital lines (ISDN), but it’s not just about phone services — any service that relies on this infrastructure will also be impacted, including:

Analogue voice telephone services
Dial-up devices and services, such as fax machines, alarm systems, modems, building management systems, lift lines and PDQ/card payment machines
ISDN2e and ISDN30e lines
Broadband services delivered over an analogue line, e.g. ADSL and FTTC fibre broadband

A major security breach has reportedly affected around 17.5 million Instagram accounts, with sensitive personal information now circulating on the dark web.

The incident, reported earlier this week by cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes, has sparked serious concerns about user privacy and account security.

What data was exposed?
The breach is said to involve a broad range of personal details that could place affected users at significant risk. The compromised information reportedly includes usernames, email addresses, phone numbers and physical addresses.

Taken together, this data could leave users more susceptible to identity theft, phishing attempts and other forms of social engineering.

Malwarebytes has also stated that the stolen database is currently being traded on dark web marketplaces, making it readily available to cybercriminals worldwide.
