A quick heads up about a piece of nuisance software called “The PC App Store”. Someone brought their computer to my office yesterday with it installed. Since then a few others, myself included, have encountered it. There is no indication that this affects Apple devices.

Please take a moment to read the notes below so you know what to look out for.

What it is:

The PC App Store is considered adware rather than a traditional virus.
It usually installs itself quietly alongside other free software and then displays unwanted pop ups. In my case, it attached itself to a legitimate app I downloaded.
It can also quietly download if you click on certain pop ups online.

What it typically does:

Multiple pop up ad's
Changes your search engine (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.)
Encourages downloads of additional unwanted software
In some cases, it may temporarily block access to your computer until you click a prompt. If this happens, simply disconnect from Wi Fi and restart your device so you can remove the app.
If you haven’t noticed any of these behaviours, your device is likely unaffected.

What to do if you think you may have it (Windows)

Click the Start icon (four blue squares at the bottom left).
Open Settings.
Select Apps.
Choose Installed Apps.
Search for PC App Store.
If nothing appears, you’re all clear.
If it does appear, click the three dots beside the name, choose Uninstall, and then run a security scan to confirm everything is clean.
Occasionally the app won’t uninstall. If that happens and you don't know how else to deal with the issue, either contact me or another professional for help
