Same swell. Different wave.

A global swell forecast sees North Devon in cells about 6 × 9 km. For Thursday 22 Oct, our model runs the same 10-second northerly swell in over the seabed to each beach: Woolacombe gets about 1.7 m, Saunton about 1.1 m, six kilometres away. Refraction, shoaling, breaking and the tide make the difference: at Saunton the water’s edge moves about 430 m up the beach between 08:00 and 14:00.

Satellites map the seabed at El Cotillo in 10-metre detail, right up to the shore, checked against NASA's ICESat-2 laser. The public chart sees the same bay in squares about 100 m across: one of them holds 120 of ours.

Waves break where the seabed rises. Most forecasts use no seabed at all.

This is El Cotillo, Fuerteventura. Open-ocean models stop out at sea, and coarse seabed charts miss the last few hundred metres, right where waves break. So 4Shor maps the seabed from satellites all the way to the shore, checks it against NASA's laser, and models the swell as it bends, steepens and breaks.
