Our typical client runs, trucks, vans, and company cars, but every now and then there is a motorbike thrown into the mix. `
Most people want their tracking device to update in the App. even if it hasn’t moved, it gives confidence that all is working well, we call this a ‘heartbeat’, it’s a GPS message that is sent when the vehicle ignition is off.
Vehicle ‘battery conservation’ is key, and (for example) one-hour updates don’t use significant power at all, but parked over time, can have an impact.
A van might have 80Ah, but a motorbike, due to obvious size and weight constraints might only have 5Ah of capacity. So, we use a slightly larger capacity battery on our tracking device to ensure that we don’t rely on a charge from the vehicle to send ‘heartbeat’ messages.
This client, operating in the building trade in London asked us to add their KTM Superduke to the platform, and whilst we don’t think they plan on any green laning or wading, ‘water ingress’ is something we want to protect against on a vehicle that’s so exposed to the elements. In this case, our larger capacity battery GPS tracker is IP68 rated to protect it.
GPS tracking for our client is more of an operational tool, but it here are couple of added benefits highlighted by the Fleet Manager at Stanmore Contractors Ltd:
”We know help is normally at hand for motorbike accidents in urban areas, but ‘crash detection’ gives a small amount of peace of mind”
“We know there’s not a lot we can do to stop motorbike theft, but ‘unplugged notifications’ gives us some warning at least”
If you have some ‘less than standard’ vehicles, plant, or equipment that you’d like to monitor, you can book a session with Sharon here https://calendly.com/sharoncostin to find out more.
