And we’re back…
It’s great to be here at Celtic Connections on Campus, presented by Audio at GCU. Can’t believe it’s been a gap of 3 years.
We’re here all week, using Show Buddy Active to light some of the best young performers from educational establishments in Scotland and far beyond.

A message for license owners of Sounds Active Essential Sound Engineering...
We'd like to remind you that Sounds Active ESE was specifically designed as a teaching resource to be installed in the classroom AND AT HOME, and that all licenses remain valid, whenever they were bought (some are 11 years old!). So if you are busy putting together a programme of remote learning for your students stuck at home during the COVID-19 emergency, Sounds Active ESE may be a useful tool at your disposal.
To help you out, we have added an EXTRA 20 workstations to all 5-workstation licenses. Site licenses already allow unlimited installs. There is a link to download the latest software in your online license report. If you need assistance - such as accessing your online license report or bringing a disused license back into service - contact us at [email protected]
Please note Sounds Active ESE is not compatible with Mac OS 10.15 (Catalina).

Last day of Celtic Connections on Campus and another fabulous lineup of talented young musicians makes a fitting finale to the fourth year of this popular concert series.

It didn’t start well for the lighting team, though. An earlier attempt to fix increasing sluggishness of our controller laptop (suspected to be due to security software) ended up trashing important bits of Windows, so we’re running on our backup laptop. A great reminder to always have a plan B, including maintaining an up-to-date copy of your show files.

Then, just as we were getting back up to speed with 30 minutes to go, everything on stage unexpectedly went dark. A few frantic minutes of fault finding later, we found the cause - a musician waiting to play had unplugged the entire rig to charge a mobile phone! Doh!
(Also kind of impressed that all 15 lights, plus interfaces, runs at less than 2A, well within the capacity of a standard UK 230V 13A socket.)

Thanks again to the students from Audio at GCU who have very capably run all the technical bits required to present the show. We wish them well as they go back to classes (and exams!) next week.

So much for saying yesterday that all the hard work had been done…

Massive panic this morning ahead of day four at Celtic Connections on Campus. With under an hour to go, we discovered one of the performers wanted to do a step dance in the normally-dark passageway between the audience and stage.

With the students from Audio at GCU temporarily redirected to stand in for stage performers (and dancer!), it only took a couple of minutes to refocus the lights to cover our new performance space. However, that left us to reprogram a whole bunch of presets to avoid unintentionally lighting the new space all the time.

Not a problem for Show Buddy Active’s visual programming facility. It takes just moments to resize the graphic elements on the 2D Visualiser screen to change what each light fixture is doing. Click “save”. Repeat, until all presets are modified as required.

Day three gets under way at Celtic Connections on Campus.

At this point, most of the hard work on lighting has been done - we’ve already programmed all the presets we need for the show - and the students simply have to choose the right preset for the moment. We’re using Show Buddy Active for this gig, so each preset not only controls our lighting rig, but also what appears on the projector screen.

Like DMXIS, presets are stored in banks (the upper left of the control screen) but Show Buddy Active also lets you organise the presets you need for the gig on the performance buttons (the bottom of the screen). Here, we’ve selected preset “Patrick”, which optimally lights our host, Patrick Quinn, and projects the Celtic Connections logo.

Day two at Celtic Connections on Campus and another four tremendous performances.

This is the second year we have supported the audio engineering students at Glasgow Caledonian University as they produce, engineer, broadcast and, now, light this popular concert series.

We’re using the department’s small but effective lighting rig: 2 x quad RGB LED T-bars, 4 x 20deg RGB LED Pars, and 3 x 40deg RGB LED Pars.

It’s an ideal gig for controlling the lights with D-Pro and DMXIS, as we did last year. However, to incorporate multimedia elements - images and video - this year we’re using our latest software, Show Buddy Active. And instead of teaming it with DMXIS for direct DMX control, we’re being a bit adventurous in communicating with our light fixtures wirelessly over Art-Net (via SmartShow UK AirDMXout nodes). This ties in well with the course curriculum which covers networking applications for AV.
