It’s hard to believe it’s already been a week since a fantastic evening at the Highways Awards.

Coeval was incredibly proud to sponsor the Best Use of New Technology Award - a category that feels particularly fitting given our own focus on developing intelligent solutions that advise, inform and protect road users.

It was a real pleasure for Coeval MD Scott Hatcher to take to the stage and present the award to the victorious Core Highways. Congratulations to the whole team on a fantastic achievement.

Further congratulations to everyone who was nominated. Being recognised is something to be proud of, and the quality of the nominations was a great reflection of the work taking place across our industry.

For Coeval, the evening was a great opportunity to celebrate the people and organisations pushing highways technology forward, whilst also catching up with friends, colleagues and partners.

Thank you to the Highways Awards team for a brilliant night - and congratulations again to Core Highways and all the nominees.

From innovation and technology to safety, sustainability, collaboration and the day-to-day work that keeps our highways network moving, there are countless examples of people and businesses making a genuine difference.

As a company focused on intelligent LED signage, detection, data and connected technology ourselves, we understand the importance of infrastructure schemes that have a practical purpose and make a difference.

The people & companies behind the ideas, projects and solutions continue to push the industry forward, and we're looking forward to celebrating their achievements, catching up with friends and colleagues from across the sector, and enjoying what promises to be a fantastic evening.

If you're going - we'll see you on Wednesday night!

Throwback Thursday: from coffee cups to a full-scale OVD system...

It may not look like the most sophisticated piece of engineering planning, but this was our highly effective prototype model for Highways UK 2025's overheight vehicle detection model!

Coffee cups, paper and a little bit of imagination took us a long way.

Last year marked Coeval's first time exhibiting at Highways UK, providing the team with a great opportunity to showcase our intelligent technology solutions, meet customers and industry colleagues, and demonstrate the thinking behind our bespoke approach.

Fast forward to 2026 and we'll be heading back - and the overheight vehicle detection system will once again take centre stage on the stand.

Joining the team at Highways UK 2026 will be MD Scott Hatcher, Operations Director Gordon Stitt, Garry Housely and Cam Hambleton.

If you're heading to Highways UK, come and say hello on stand C58, see the OVD technology for yourself and have a chat with the team about the challenges you're facing.

WHY BRIDGE STRIKE PREVENTION IS ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL...

A bridge strike can be much more than an impact between a vehicle and a piece of infrastructure.

The consequences can extend to people, the wider road network and the organisations responsible for keeping it moving.

At Coeval, our approach is simple: detect the risk before it becomes an incident - and inform.

Our Overheight Vehicle Detection (OVD) systems use sensors to monitor approaching vehicles and identify those exceeding the defined height threshold before they reach a bridge or other overhead infrastructure.

When an overheight vehicle is detected, intelligent LED signage provides a clear instruction to stop, turn back or take a nominated diversion.

The result? A first line of defence against one of the highway network's most disruptive incidents.

And if we don't take prevention seriously? Well, let's analyse those knock-on effects with 3 C's...

🔵 Catastrophe:

A bridge strike can put lives at risk - from someone on or beneath the bridge to the occupants of the vehicle involved. In the most serious circumstances, the consequences can include serious injury or fatality.

🔵 Closures:

A strike can result in the closure of the carriageway beneath the bridge, the bridge itself, or both.

This can cause significant disruption for road users and have a knock-on effect for vital services, including emergency response.

🔵 Costs:

There are the immediate costs of damage to the vehicle, but also potentially significant costs associated with inspecting, repairing or even demolishing and replacing an irreparably damaged bridge.

Surrounding infrastructure and nearby vehicles can also be affected.

Prevention, therefore, makes a significant difference.

By detecting an overheight vehicle before it reaches the point of danger and providing the driver with a clear, immediate warning, Coeval's OVD technology helps protect people, infrastructure and the wider network.

Catastrophe. Closure. Costs. Three reasons why preventing the bridge strike is better than dealing with the 4th C - consequences.

What our clients say...

From parish councils looking to make their communities safer, to major highways operators managing some of the UK's busiest roads, Coeval's client base spans the breadth of the highways network.

And while the technology is important, so is the service that comes with it.

From overheight vehicle detection and speed indicator signs to bespoke intelligent warning systems, Coeval works closely with clients to understand the challenge and deliver the right solution.

Because ultimately, it's not just about supplying a sign or system - it's about delivering technology that works and providing a service that clients can rely on for the safety of their stakeholders.

Here's what some of Coeval's clients have had to say about working with the team:

How do you stop a bridge strike before it happens?

The answer is early detection.

Coeval's Overheight Vehicle Detection (OVD) System continuously monitors approaching traffic using advanced sensors, identifying overheight vehicles before they reach low bridges, tunnels, gantries and other restricted infrastructure.

When a vehicle exceeds the permitted height, an intelligent LED warning sign is activated instantly, giving the driver clear instructions to stop, turn back or follow a designated diversion.

It's a simple concept that delivers significant safety benefits - protecting road users, safeguarding critical infrastructure and helping to reduce the disruption and cost associated with bridge strikes.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

A week on from the LCRIG Innovation & Learning Festival 2026, the Coeval team is reflecting on two fantastic days spent catching up with familiar faces, meeting new contacts and discussing the future of road safety technology.

It was great to see so many meaningful conversations taking place around the industry's biggest challenges. Two topics, in particular, stood out - Overheight Vehicle Detection (OVD) and Flood Warning Systems.

The timing of the event also came shortly after the publication of the UK's first major Road Safety Strategy in more than a decade, setting an ambitious target to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain's roads by 65% by 2035. The strategy places technology, innovation and safer infrastructure firmly at the heart of achieving those goals - an approach that aligns with our product portfolio.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand last week.

Whether it was to discuss an existing project, explore a bespoke solution or simply catch up, it was a pleasure speaking with you all.

Today marks the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as joint hosts Mexico take on South Africa in the tournament opener.

With Coeval proudly operating on both sides of the border, we'll be keeping a close eye on the fortunes of both England and Scotland throughout the competition and wishing the home nations every success on the world's biggest football stage.

England begin their campaign against Croatia on Wednesday 17 June at 9pm (UK time), before taking on Ghana and Panama in Group L.

Scotland's long-awaited return to the World Cup sees them kick off against Haiti at 2am (UK time) on Sunday 14 June, before further group matches against Morocco and Brazil.

Good luck to both nations - and here's hoping for a memorable summer of football!
