Lots of small business owners come to us convinced they need a brand-new website. Often, they don't...their site just hasn't kept up with how their business has evolved.

Our founder, Elaine, is now a columnist for The Female CEO! In her debut article, she looks at why you shouldn't automatically throw out an old website just because you're bored of looking at it.

A few key points from her piece:

- Diagnose before you buy: "I don't like it anymore" isn't a good enough reason to pay for a full redesign. Figure out what's actually broken first.
- Protect what works: Rebuilding from scratch without checking your current Google presence can accidentally wipe out search rankings you've spent years building up.
- Actually use your own website: Test it on a phone. Is it quick enough? Is it obvious who you help? Does it help people take the next step?

Most small business websites don’t need to be complicated. They just need the right structure.

If you’re thinking about getting a new website or reviewing your current one, here are three core pages to focus on:

- A Clear, Focused Homepage: This acts as your digital front door. When someone lands on your site, they should immediately understand what you do, who you help, and whether you’re right for them.
- Dedicated Service Pages: If you offer more than one service, each one deserves its own page. Cramming everything onto one page makes it harder for visitors and search engines to see what you offer.
- An About Page That Feels Human: People buy from people. Explaining who you are, how long you’ve been doing what you do, and what makes your approach different builds trust.

Big girl pants, a climbing wall, and a sea full of dolphins!

If I’m being honest, I almost didn't go. Facing a massive fear of heights and a room full of new faces had me reaching for my kettle instead. But I’m so glad I put my big girl pants on!

Joining Market Collective and local Sunderland business owners for a night out at Adventure Sunderland showed me what the Digitising the High Street project is really about: building a genuine, supportive community where local traders have each other's backs.

We teamed up with Market Collective to deliver this project as part of the North East BIC’s Enterprising Sunderland programme, funded by UKSPF and Sunderland City Council.

Alongside building that local support network, Exaltis provides hands-on digital tools to help shops thrive:

- In-depth online reviews: Explaining in plain English what’s working with your online presence and what isn't.
- Local visibility audits: Checking your site traffic and Google Business Profile so local shoppers actually find you.
- Jargon-free plans: Actionable, clear strategies to drive real footfall through your door.

When you blend a strong local community with the right digital tools, high streets don't just survive, they thrive.

Digitising the High Street doesn’t mean replacing physical shops, it’s about giving local businesses the digital toolkit to thrive.

We teamed up with Market Collective to deliver the Digitising the High Street project. This is part of the North East BIC’s Enterprising Sunderland initiative, funded by UKSPF and Sunderland City Council.

Through this fully funded initiative, Exaltis worked directly with local traders, auditing existing sites, advising on SEO, and building brand-new websites to help them modernise. Here are some of the steps to a future-proof high street we focused on:

- Build an Online Presence: Creating clean, user-friendly websites so customers can find you 24/7.
- Simplify Customer Service: Adding quick-response tools like live chat and easy online ordering.
- Merge Online & Offline: Options like mobile ordering, online event booking, and streamlined in-store tech (like pre-ordering for pickup).

Technology isn't a threat to local retail...it's its best partner.

If you’ve ever looked into local SEO, you’ll quickly notice that pricing in the UK is all over the place.

One agency quotes £200 a month, another quotes £2,500 and a third refuses to give you a number until you’ve sat through a discovery call.

What actually drives the cost of SEO up or down?

Before looking at exact price tags, it helps to understand what usually shapes the quote:

- Your Goals & Timeline: Wanting fast results in three months means a much heavier upfront effort rather than building steadily over a year. Because SEO builds momentum over time, taking a measured approach often keeps costs down.
- Your Target Area: Focusing on a single local area is far more affordable than trying to rank across the whole UK.
- Your Site's Current Health: If a website has underlying technical errors the ground work has to be fixed first. A site with strong foundations is much faster and cheaper to optimize.

Your Google Business Profile might be working against you, without you even realising it.

Most local business owners set it up once and never look at it again. The problem? Google’s search tools and AI constantly look for active, consistent signals.

When a profile starts dropping down the map results, the reason is usually a few small, quiet mistakes.

Things like:
- Mismatched business name or address across the web
- Unanswered customer reviews
- Picking the wrong primary category

We’ve broken down the 5 most common mistakes hurting Google visibility (and how to fix them).

Running a small business can be brilliant, but let’s be honest it can also be very lonely at times.

When you’re the owner, every decision rests on your shoulders. There’s no safety net when things go wrong, no IT department when the site goes down, and no one else doing the late-night worrying.

A few things that help when the solo strain starts creeping in:
- Build a local network: Connect with other business owners who actually understand the reality of running things.
- Stop overthinking in isolation: Talk through business ideas out loud instead of keeping them trapped in your head.
- Outsource the struggle: Stop trying to be an expert in everything!

You don't have to carry every part of your business entirely on your own. If your website or local SEO is one of those jobs making you feel stuck, let us take it off your plate.

Most small business websites are practically invisible on Google, but it’s rarely because they look bad, it’s usually because Google doesn’t actually understand what they do or where they are.

A few simple steps to change that:
- Claim your Google Business Profile and fill in every detail accurately.
- Include your town or area naturally within your website text, not just hidden away on a contact page.
- Collect genuine reviews from real customers on a regular basis.
