Ever spent half an hour trying to agree on what to watch? We built MovieZang to fix that.
What is MovieZang?
MovieZang is a group voting tool for movie night. Everyone suggests films, everyone votes, and the app shows you what wins. Simple as that. No more endless scrolling or “I don’t mind, you choose.”
What’s in the new iOS app:
🎯 Real-Time Presence – See who’s in the room as they arrive. The app knows who’s joined, so you can tell when everyone’s ready to vote.
👍 Live Voting – Votes appear as they happen. Each thumbs up shows the person’s name and their film choice—no refreshing, no waiting about.
💬 Built-in Chat – Sort out your plans and have a proper discussion without switching apps. Works on both iOS and web.
🔗 Simple Room Sharing – This is quite useful: copy your room link with the code, send it to your mates, and they can join through the web app straightaway. No need for everyone to download anything—iOS users get the app, everyone else jumps in through their browser.
Whether it’s a Friday night with family or coordinating with friends across town, MovieZang gets everyone voting together to actually pick something to watch.

Solving that first world problem, what the heck am I going to watch now.

Discover new shows and movies with searching through the huge TMDB database and have smart recommendations using our AI assistant.

Finally solving our family’s weekly Friday night Netflix nightmare

Every Friday is “action family film night” in our house. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? In reality, it’s 45 minutes of endless Netflix scrolling whilst everyone argues about what to watch, followed by someone inevitably saying “let’s just watch this one” when we’re all too knackered to care anymore.

Enter MovieZang — born from pure Friday night frustration and a desperate need to actually start films before bedtime.

The weekly ordeal, solved:

- Everyone joins our family “movie room”
- Each person votes on what they fancy (no more “I don’t mind” followed by immediate vetoing)
- App shows us what we can all actually agree on
- We spend our precious evening watching films instead of scrolling through them

Built with some rather impressive tools:

- React for the interface
- Cursor + Claude Code (AI doing the heavy lifting whilst I pretend to know what I’m doing)
- Convex database (designed for LLMs, perfect for someone who treats databases like mysterious contraptions)
- Playwright MCP for testing (watching Claude open a browser and test my app is genuinely surreal)

Honestly, if this saves us even 20 minutes on Friday nights, it’s already worth the weekends I spent building it. Though knowing my family, we’ll probably just spend the saved time arguing about snacks instead.
