An update on COVID-19 from Frambroadband.
Good morning all.
Following news this morning about the state of telecoms networks in general, we are prepared for the increase in traffic associated with schools closing.
As things stand we do not expect loads any more significant than usual peak-time easter-holiday loads, but we will continue to monitor the situation.
We currently have a significant amount of spare fibre capacity, and radio capacity can be tuned to meet demand (retuning may result in network interruptions of a few seconds if we need to do any during peak times).
As of this point, until isolation is over, we will be waiving all customers usage caps as we understand many will be working from home.
Our current rollout of faster speeds across the network may continue or may be paused depending on changes to demand, we may, or may not also complete hardware upgrades to the network at short notice if required.
There are two things we would particularly like to draw your attention to:
1) It is looking highly likely that streaming service providers (Netflix/BBC/Spotify/Amazon etc.) will be persuaded to switch streaming to Standard Definition only (no HD or 4K) to protect international network infrastructure, streaming makes up approx. 70% of all internet traffic now and with schools closing across the world at the same time this may be a prudent step. We would suggest that all customers do this now themselves to get ahead of the curve. This is usually an option in your streaming app and providers websites/help pages should explain how.
2) Our engineers will need to undertake increased precautions when undertaking premises visits. We will check with you if a visit is booked to see if anyone is showing symptoms or self-isolating and we may need to either reschedule the visit, or find a non-contact way to complete the visit. We appreciate we are now managing nationally critical network infrastructure and need to act accordingly.
If there are any changes to the above, we will communicate them as urgently as we can.
Many thanks,
Oli Stockman
