Things have been moving in the right direction lately and I have been busy designing all manner of things, for all manner of people and businesses; Menus and gift vouchers for a restaurant. Posters for music events and a charity. A logo for a stealth tech start-up. A website design for a personal trainer, and social media images for a pilot! It just goes to show that EVERYBODY NEEDS DESIGN!

That might be a website to showcase your services and generate leads .. An email marketing campaign to drive traffic to a product or event .. Advertising .. Social media .. A fresh new logo .. the list goes on!

No matter the project or the client, there is one thing that I have always held constant - an ethos to remain friendly, helpful and honest - building relationships beyond the professional.

AI generated posters - they seem to be everywhere at the moment, and they stick out like a sore thumb!

Just like when AI logos ran amok, AI posters now all share that same ‘poor-mans Disney’ look. Yes I understand that they are quick to produce for a non-creative or free for an individual who just wants to promote their event, but when you see enough of them, you just pass them by - your brain doesn’t even register them (unless you’re out hunting down AI posters like me).

Whereas a bespoke poster, created with the brand in mind, combined with a feel for the event it is there to promote, come across in an entirely different light.

So separate yourselves from everyone else and get a poster done by a designer and claim your individuality back.

So, you’ve already got a website? .. Then you don’t need me for that .. But how do you bring people to that site and shout about your services, products or an event? One way would be to utilise email marketing.

I design bespoke, visually pleasing emails, tailored directly to your style and brand. AND, not only do I design these, I also code them, by-hand, from a blank page up. There are no email builders or auto-generated templates here.

This is the process that I have used during my 30 years as a web designer, and I still use today. Every step listed above involves YOU, the client, so that we work TOGETHER to create and mould your vision into the finished product.

The sun has come out and temperatures are finally in double figures - that means Summer is coming right?!

The Harbour Screen in Folkestone brings you the ultimate open air seaside cinema experience (perfect for Summer!). You can watch a host of films and sporting events on the large, state-of-the-art outdoor screen. When this fantastic experience was unveiled I designed the website to promote the upcoming films and events, and to book tickets.

You know me - I’m Matt, a freelance digital designer - and you know what I’m offering (or at least you should, if you’ve been keeping up with my posts). But WHY, after 20 years, have I decided to jump back into the realm of being a self-employed freelance designer and all of the trouble and risk that that can bring?

WHY MATT? WHY??

Well, as someone with a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a benefit to people like you (thanks Liam Neeson), I have always found myself doing extra little bits of design work on the side for friends and family, and generally for free too!

These have ranged from a logo for a rugby club and posters for a pub, to wedding anniversary invites and leaflet designs, as well as PLENTY of bits for the band I’m in and their social media accounts .. Did I mention, ALL FOR FREE??

Last year I had the opportunity to turn my full-time job into a self-employed role. After some consideration I agreed to this, as it would give me the opportunity to build on these “side projects” - but paid for this time! - as well as maintaining continued work from my previous employer.

So that’s where I’m at. 2026 has got off to a great start, with lots of promising opportunities opening for me.

I’ll continue to add posts letting you know what I’m up to; I don’t know if this is the correct way to utilise social media nowadays - a lot of the posts I see are full-on editorial pieces - they’re great, but that’s not me. What you will get is just plain speaking, honest posts about me and my work. I’m a one-man-band after all, a freelancer - I’ll just keep it simple and friendly.

Okay so I’ve introduced myself, you now know WHO I am, but WHAT AM I DOING?

After 20 years I have decided to jump back into the realm of freelance design; I’m not certain that this is the right decision, and I’m not sure it will even work - but here I am.

“No job is too big, no fee is too big” (as the Ghostbusters once said) - Although that’s not entirely my mantra, as I am here to do the smaller, one-off designs. I’m not targeting big budget corporate projects, I’m more interested in helping the small businesses and the individuals. Whether that’s a website design, an email campaign, a logo, or a poster design - the list really is endless; If it needs designing, I can probably find a solution for you.

But no matter the project or the client, there is one thing that I have always held constant - an ethos to remain friendly, helpful and honest - building relationships beyond the professional.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! How has everyone been finding their first week back on the hamster wheel?

It’s generally at this time of year that we look at new plans and new ideas to take us forwards - the whole “New year / New you” thing right! So with this in mind, I thought I’d take the opportunity to reintroduce myself:

What am I doing? Why am I here? .. That’s the eternal question right? But I’m not going to answer the meaning of life for you here (I’ll save that for another post!) - Instead I am going to narrow down my view just a touch and focus on little ol’ me.

WHO AM I?

Hi .. I’m Matt .. I have worked within the design industry for 30 years; In that time I have been a freelancer, a sub-contractor for multiple agencies, and I’ve held full-time roles as Senior Designer and Project Manager at successful web and publishing agencies.

I have designed everything from small one-off logos, stationery and leaflets, to complete websites for individuals and large-scale national corporations.

And now, after 20 years, I have jumped back into the realm of freelance design; I’m not certain that this is the right decision, I’m not even sure that this will work - it’s a loaded marketplace these days - and don’t even get me started on AI (I’ll save that for another post!). But here I am.

I’ve been adding posts outlining my return to this path, and showing you what I’ve done and what I’m up to now. I don’t know if this is the correct way to utilise social media nowadays - a lot of the posts I see are less personal and more worthy of inclusion in high-end design magazines - they’re great, but that’s not me.

So you won’t find magazine-worthy, full editorial pieces here; posts about my views on the current state of the design industry, or the problems with the hiring algorithm, oh no - What you will get is just plain speaking, honest posts about me and my work. I’m a one-man-band after all, a freelancer - let’s just keep it simple and friendly.
