There's a big difference between proving you've tested your security and proving you've improved it.

A recent industry discussion raised an interesting concern about pe*******on testing. Their organisation had been carrying out tests to meet compliance requirements, but they were questioning whether those tests were actually helping them understand and reduce their security risks.

It's an important distinction. Because passing an audit doesn't necessarily mean your business is protected against every threat. And completing a pe*******on test doesn't automatically mean the findings have been addressed.

For business leaders, the questions worth asking are:

🔹 Are we testing the systems and information that matter most to our business?
🔹 Do we understand what the findings mean for our operations?
🔹 Are identified weaknesses being addressed?
🔹 Are we checking that the improvements have actually worked?

Cybersecurity shouldn't just be about demonstrating compliance. It should be about continually reducing risk.

At Layer 4, we believe a proactive approach to IT means understanding where potential problems exist and taking practical steps to address them before they become bigger issues.

Because the real value isn't simply in completing the assessment. It's in what your business does with the results.

October is Cybersecurity Month 🔐

And it’s a good opportunity for businesses to check that some of the cybersecurity basics haven’t been overlooked.

A few simple places to start:
• Make sure multi-factor authentication is enabled wherever possible
• Keep devices, software and security updates up to date
• Remind your team to be cautious with unexpected emails, links and login requests
• Check that important business data is properly backed up
• Make sure everyone knows what to do - and who to contact - if something doesn’t look right

Good cybersecurity isn’t about making technology more complicated. It’s about putting the right protections in place and helping people make safer decisions every day.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing more practical cybersecurity advice to help businesses stay protected.
