Old Cartshed Studio Printmaking and Pottery

Old Cartshed Studio Printmaking and Pottery Our studio is home to four artists Peon Boyle, Michael Lainchbury, Sue Hawksworth, and Annie Watts who share a simple belief: everyone can create.

This is more than just a printmaking and ceramic studio; it’s a place where making is matter. Our Studios offer a diverse range of stimulating, artist-led courses in a friendly and creative environment. Our aim is to encourage students to develop confidence in their own artistic abilities and ideas, helping them further their own artistic practice. Our courses are attended by people of all levels

of ability, from independently practicing artists to complete beginners. This allows us to cultivate a unique space that is both innovative and supportive where students harbour a genuine drive to produce quality artworks and realise their individual outcomes. In this way we are able to connect to a wider artistic community through our regular exhibitions and further establish ourselves as a new and exciting centre for artistic practice.

Collagraph Deep Dive — back at the studio this May

Peon is running a six-evening printmaking, starting 18th May, and there are still places if you’re interested.
It’s a proper deep dive into collagraph — from building richly textured plates right through to pulling a finished edition. We’ll work through developing imagery, experimenting with materials and adhesives, refining your inking and wiping technique, and exploring multi-colour printing through layering and registration. Curiosity-led, hands-on, and unhurried.

Monday evenings, 6–9pm: 18th & 25th May, then 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd June.

If you’ve been wanting to get into printmaking properly — not just a taster, but the real thing — this is that course. More details and booking at bio 👆🏼

Two Materials, One still life

Started these two drawings as a demo for my students — they wanted to see how charcoal and pencil behave differently. Ran out of time in class, so I took them back to the studio to finish properly.
Charcoal and pencil are both dry drawing media but they couldn’t feel more different in your hand. Charcoal is immediate, expressive, forgiving — you can push it around and build dark tones fast. Pencil demands more patience, more control, more commitment to every mark.
Same subject. Two very different conversations.

Can we talk about how good the sun felt this week? ☀️

After all that rain and wind, stepping into the studio and actually feeling warmth was everything. The field looked beautiful, the snowdrops are out, and the animals were making the most of it — same as us.

With the warmer season on its way, we’re getting ready to open our doors to the public again. Drawing, printmaking, paper textiles, and ceramics courses are all coming up.
Stay close — we’d love to have you here. 🌸
