Iatefl LTSIG The IATEFL Learning Technologies SIG page is a space for connection, conversation, and collaboration.
(1)

We’re a global community of educators, researchers, and practitioners interested in how learning technologies shape teaching and learning. The Learning Technologies (LT) SIG is one of the largest and the oldest of the IATEFL SIGs. It began as the COMPUTERS SIG in the mid 1980s and now has around 500 members. This reflects the growing interest in new technologies. The SIG is concerned with the appl

ications of new technologies to English language learning. The SIG includes among its interests the use of corpora and concordancers, multimedia, computer mediated communication, text-based software, authoring, the WWW, Interactive Whiteboards and also the more technical issues Any and all of these, of course, have powerful uses in the many contexts which are EFL, from Young Learners, Independence, ESP, Business English, Teacher training, and indeed for all of the other SIGs.

🇵🇱 LTSIG is heading to Warsaw!

We’re delighted to be joining IATEFL Poland for the 35th International Conference, taking place from 18–20 September 2026 at Vistula University.

Under this year’s theme, The Changemakers’ Revolution, educators from across the international ELT community will come together to explore innovation, technology and the ideas shaping the future of language education.

We’re especially excited to see LTSIG represented in Warsaw alongside a fantastic line-up of colleagues and contributors, including Maria Diakou, Eftychis Kantarakis, Rob Howard, Alexandra Covaci, teachertrainingvideos.com, Gary Bond, Tracy Huntingford, Anna Podlewska, Sushil Penuti, János Ujlaki and Mateusz Jekiel.

💡 What if AI stopped answering students' questions - and started questioning their answers?

In this new LTSIG Perspectives contribution, Alexandra Covaci reframes conversational AI as a Socratic dialogue partner: a low-stakes space in which university EFL students can rehearse arguments, identify bias, explore counter-perspectives, and strengthen their reasoning.

The article offers three practical classroom activities:

1. Persuade the Sceptic
2. Spot the Bias
3. The Devil's Advocate

The aim is not to replace human dialogue, but to prepare students for it - while keeping critical literacy, privacy, verification, and learner agency at the centre of AI-supported work.

How have you used AI to deepen thinking rather than bypass it? We would love to hear your experiences and practical ideas. Contact us at [email protected] - your perspective could inspire our global community.
