🎄 Repair Cafe Portchester 🎄
✨We’re back and ready to repair 🛠️

After a short break, the Repair Café Portchester team is thrilled to be returning - thank you so much to everyone who patiently waited while we were away. We’ve missed you and can’t wait to get back to fixing, mending, and bringing things back to life!

📅 Join us on SATURDAY, 29th November at Portchester Community Centre for our final session before Christmas!
Winter’s coming fast - and we won’t be here in December - so now’s the perfect time to:
🎄Fix your Christmas lights, decorations, and ornaments
🧤Mend coats, scarves, hats, and gloves ready for the chilly days ahead
🎒That tired school jumper or backpack may need a little attention to keep it going this winter
🧸Repair toys, heated blankets or kettles to keep things cozy

We all know that with Christmas fast approaching, it can be a busy and expensive time of year - there’s so much to organise and the costs soon add up!
With winter settling in and the kids needing new things for school again, it can feel like there’s always something else to buy or fix.
That’s where we come in - let us take a little of the burden off your shoulders. Bring your items along to the Repair Café and we’ll help you get them back in working order. Together we can save money, reduce waste, and make this winter a little bit easier (and warmer!) for everyone.
Let’s make this a pre-Christmas tune-up for your home - keeping waste out of landfill, saving money, and spreading that warm, community spirit that makes Portchester shine.
Come down for a cuppa in the Courtyard Cafe while you wait, leave with a smile, and something that needed a little love, repaired and ready for re-use.

♿ Repair Café Portchester x Repair Café Gosport : The story behind a Special Wheelchair Repair Event 🤝

Today, volunteers from Repair Café Portchester teamed up with our friends at Repair Café Gosport for something truly special, a wheelchair repair event dedicated to giving basketball wheelchairs a new lease of life.

Together, our teams brought their skills, creativity, and teamwork to the challenge of restoring sports wheelchairs used by students and young athletes. From tightening axles and replacing inner tubes to aligning frames and cleaning bearings, every repair made today helps ensure that these chairs can continue to be used safely and confidently; opening doors for both able-bodied and less able-bodied students to take part in inclusive sport.

This event wasn’t just about fixing equipment, it was about supporting possibility, performance, and passion!

We were inspired by Paralympic athletes Jade Atkin and Eden Rainbow-Cooper, who both began their journeys using these very same wheelchairs we worked on today at Portchester Community School. These chairs carry a huge legacy & their stories remind us of the power of opportunity and accessibility and how simple acts of repair can ripple into something much greater.

“When we’re on court, we’re all equal.” – Jade Atkin
Jade is a wheelchair basketball player who has represented England / Great Britain (including in the Commonwealth Games), and has won medals at U24 European and U25 World Junior Championships. She has been part of squads that have earned gold and bronze, and as quoted, she already “has an international medal of each colour” in her U24 / U25 competitions. Jade hopes there's more focus on wheelchair basketball so kids who are either newly disabled, or have been disabled their whole lives, can understand how great it is!

Eden Rainbow-Cooper is a wheelchair racer (T54 classification) from Portsmouth. In April 2024 she became the first British woman to win the Boston Marathon wheelchair race, crossing the line in 1hr 35m & 11s. She also won a silver medal in the women’s T54 marathon at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. More broadly, Eden’s journey is inspiring: from being introduced to wheelchair racing in school, to competing internationally, all with grit and determination.

Today’s collaboration showed exactly that spirit of equality and community in action. Volunteers from both cafés learned new skills, shared ideas, and demonstrated how local repair initiatives can support inclusion in sport and help our planet at the same time. 🌍

By repairing and reusing equipment rather than replacing it, we also made a positive impact on the environment preventing an estimated 4,204 kg of CO₂e emissions.
That’s the equivalent of growing 70 tree seedlings for 10 years! 🌱🌳

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along from those who turned spanners and swapped inner tubes, to those who moved chairs, cleaned, and supported logistics. Your care, patience, and enthusiasm made this event an incredible success.

We’re already looking forward to building on today’s experience and perhaps creating a “How to Repair Wheelchair Basketball Chairs” guide so others can carry this work forward.

Here’s to more teamwork, more learning, and more opportunities to make a difference, one repair (and one saved kilogram of CO₂) at a time. 💪🔧

🌍✨ Another successful Repair Café in Portchester!

At our last event, we not only fixed treasured items but also made a real impact on the environment. Every repair means less waste and less CO₂ released into the atmosphere. To put that into perspective: the amount of CO₂ we’ve saved is like planting a small patch of deciduous and coniferous trees & growing them for 10 years🌳🌲 each one quietly working to clean the air, provide shade, shelter wildlife, and store carbon for years to come. Just as we plant seedlings that grow into strong trees, every repair we do plants the seed of a more sustainable future. 💚

Highlights from the day included John bringing joy by repairing a beautiful old jukebox 🎶 the smile on our guest’s face said it all! Fred also worked his magic on a DeWalt site radio 🔧, giving it a new lease of life and saving it from ending up in landfill.

Together, we’re proving that small fixes grow into big change. 🌱✨ Thank you, Portchester, for being part of this movement!

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Tony 🌟
If you’ve ever arrived at the Repair Café and felt instantly welcomed, chances are Tony had something to do with it. Helping to run the show at reception, Tony is the steady, friendly presence greeting guests, managing and allocating incoming items, and making sure all safety procedures are followed. Often working alongside Nicole, he brings a calming energy to the front desk, offering support and reassurance to both guests and fellow volunteers alike. Tony’s skills aren’t limited to reception either — he’s not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get stuck into the repair work, often stepping in to help with walk-in fixes. One memorable moment was when he brought a smile to a young visitor’s face by successfully repairing their beloved Star Wars toy. He’s also a keen learner, often sitting in with other repairers to grow his knowledge and pick up new skills, always looking for ways to be even more helpful to the community.
More importantly, Tony’s help doesn’t stop at the door — he’s been just as hands-on behind the scenes, always ready to pitch in and help ensure the Repair Café can continue to thrive.
Tony’s path to the Repair Café has been anything but ordinary. He began his career as a junior sales rep at Burton Tailors in North End, Portsmouth, moving across the south coast and eventually managing shops in Henley-on-Thames and Devon. His reputation for precision in tailoring earned him many loyal customers — and, no doubt, some of the best-fitting suits they ever owned.
Later in life, Tony trained as a milling machine operator before being made redundant, which led him into a decade of double glazing sales. But one of his favourite roles before retirement was unexpectedly as a milkman. He fondly remembers the early mornings on the South Downs as some of the most peaceful and picturesque moments of his working life.
Tony has faced serious health challenges — including multiple heart attacks, a heart bypass, and cancer — and has come through it all with remarkable strength and spirit. It’s that resilience, and his desire to give back, that brought him to the Repair Café.
We’re incredibly lucky to have Tony here in Portchester, sharing his time, warmth, and wisdom with our community.
Thank you, Tony — for everything.
