It is highly unlikely that anyone has been unaware of the tariffs that have been introduced this year. It has dominated the media, and its effects on the global stock markets have been marked. The situation appears to still be fluid, and its effect on the geopolitical landscape has been immeasurable. So, I hear you cry, how can MCI help us?

MCI can offer quite a few services to ‘soften’ the impact of the tariffs, not only on companies in the UK, but companies globally.

Firstly, we have a distribution department that can supply electrical and electronic components at very competitive prices within short timeframes. This includes components from ‘obsolete’ machinery, that MCI can refurbish and test.

MCI also offers a bespoke design and manufacture service. This means that we can create the machine parts that you need in some cases. Since the UK has recently entered into a trade agreement with the USA that ensures lower tariffs, MCI’s in-house manufactured parts have become particularly attractive to our customers, as they are all made in Scotland and can be sent internationally. MCI is also renowned for being impartial and, if it is better for us to source it for you, we have excellent contacts worldwide to ensure very competitive prices, even with tariffs included.

Finally, sometimes parts just need to be repaired rather than replaced. In most cases, this can be more cost and time efficient and in a case where the machine is a longstanding workhorse, we can either repair the machine part, or source and refurbish the part required. We can even help you fit and install the refurbished part, if necessary.

Give MCI a call on 01324 611371 (tel:%2001324%20611371) to see how we can help you keep your machinery going, wherever it may be in the world.

MCI were approached by a local farm to fix a rather unusual problem. Their tractor driver had put the baler control underneath the driving seat rather than hang it up on the hook provided.
When the driver’s seat was lowered, it pushed the joystick through the control assembly, damaging an important chip and rendering the baler control useless.

Unfortunately, MCI could not save the chip on this occasion, but managed to source a replacement. The chip was installed, circuit board repaired and the repaired control was returned to the customer.

If you have any repairs, agricultural or industrial, no matter how unusual, just call MCI on 01324 611371 for a prompt repair. Have a good weekend everyone!

MCI were approached by a major worldwide air conditioning company to repair a circuit board from their test equipment, used to ensure the air conditioning units pass their quality process before dispatch.

The hand made circuit board came from a bespoke testing machine. The board needed to be fully realised as a final product so that it could be more reliable and repairable in the future. MCI not only repaired the old circuit board, so the products could be tested, but also designed and manufactured new circuit boards with modern parts. This created a circuit board that was complete and updated. We at MCI can bespoke design and manufacture most electronic and electrical boards and panels for a wide variety of machinery, working with you to create the solution that you’ve been looking for.

If you need old, obsolete circuit boards reverse engineered or modernised give MCI a call on 01324 611371 to see how we can help keep your machinery going.

MCI received an emergency repair from a nationally renowned bakery. A chocolate extrusion machine had broken down. No chocolate extrusion machine, no lovely chocolatey delights. MCI wasn’t just helping the bakery, it was almost performing a public service! Time was definitely of the essence with this repair.

MCI’s engineers came to help and got the unresponsive control panel from the machine on Friday morning. The repair needed to be completed for start of manufacture the next day. Once back at our workshop in Falkirk, our engineer opened the control panel unit to find corrosion to the PCB affecting tracks, a few components and the keypad. MCI’s engineers repaired the damaged tracks, replaced the faulty components and replaced all 14 buttons. After testing, the unit was delivered back late Friday afternoon to a very pleased customer. Chocolate goods were definitely back on the menu!

If you are having a problem with any of your machinery, just give MCI a call on 01324 611371 (tel:%2001324%20611371), to see how we can help you keep your machinery going. We offer a wide range of services from repair to electrical and electronic supply, installation and maintenance.

MCI has a long association with the maritime community, from leisure craft to submarines, we can help repair the electrical and electronic elements of it all. This time, we were asked to repair the steering control for a vessel which was stuck in port.

MCI's engineers dismantled the steering control and found numerous blown components. It wasn't long before we successfully replaced the damaged components and returned them to the ship. The ship was back on course in no time. They also sent us some fine photos of the vessel to show you. More happy customers getting back to their lives on the ocean waves.

If you need help keeping your ship or factory afloat, contact MCI on 01324 611371 to see how MCI can help you keep your machinery going.

Today, MCI celebrates the life of Robert Noyce. He was known as ‘the Mayor of Silicon Valley’ and was the founder of the Intel Corporation. If you’re not sure of the impact that Noyce has had in your life, look at your PC, laptop or tablet – we’re pretty sure you’ll see the Intel sticker somewhere. He is credited with inventing integrated circuits made with silicon. This led to the area to be called Silicon Valley. Noyce’s invention allowed computers to be significantly smaller and more powerful. In short, the silicon integrated circuit made personal computing possible.

Once, Noyce was asked what he would do if he were “emperor” of the United States. He said that he would, among other things, “…make sure we are preparing our next generation to flourish in a high-tech age. And that means education of the lowest and the poorest, as well as at the graduate school level.”

A noble sentiment indeed.

Sadly, Robert Noyce died of a heart attack at the early age of 62 on 3rd June 1990. His legacy, however, lives on in our computers.

MCI may not be the father of computing, but we think of him every time we use a PC or laptop. If you are having problems with your control panel or PLC, just give MCI a call on 01324 611371 to see how we can help get your machinery back up and working in no time.

MCI were asked to attend a custom door manufacturer’s factory to repair an edge banding machine that had failed.
On arrival, we found that the PLC had failed, with no power and no lights illuminated. Because of the age of the machine, the PLC was obsolete – but for MCI, we specialise in making your workhorse machines work longer… And harder, so it’s no problem for us.

The unit was removed from the machine by our engineers and taken to the MCI workshop for testing and repair.
MCI was able to repair the unit, retrieve the program for safekeeping and return to the machine.
After reinstalling the machine, it was back to working perfectly. Another happy MCI customer.

If your trusty old machine is struggling, or is taking an unscheduled ‘rest’, give MCI a call on 01324 611371 and we can help you get your machinery back up and running in no time.

Today, MCI wants to celebrate the life and inventions of Marlan Bourns, who passed on March 18th 2014. He was the inventor of the Trimpot trimming potentiometer in 1952. A potentiometer is fitted directly onto the circuit board and allows you to adjust the resistance in a circuit. The current can be controlled by changing the position of a wiper on a resistive track.

Marlan and Rosemary Bourns started their business in a small garage behind their house. A small band of engineers beavered away developing components that would assist the aeronautic industry in such matters as the altitude of aircraft and guided missiles, monitoring flight surfaces, acceleration and hydraulic pressure. Marlan’s wife, Rosemary tested the components in her kitchen, using her freezer and oven. It wasn’t long before the company grew to international proportions.

The components were used in the Apollo missions to the moon. Bourns famously provided the sensor used in the joystick of the Lunar Landing Module and the pressure transducers that regulated the oxygen flow to the astronauts as they walked on the moon. Bourns components have even been used in the Mars rovers and other interplanetary probes.

Today, you can find Bourns potentiometers regulating the power in mobile phone towers. Marlan Bourns had over 100 patents to his name and employed thousands of people across the globe. The family continues to run the company.

MCI manufactures and repairs PCBs and circuit boards of all kinds for all industries. Whether you are looking for something bespoke, or wanting to order some spares, give us a call on 01324 611371 to see how we can help keep your machinery going. Have a good weekend everyone!

Every workplace has a machine that has been there from the beginning, your workhorse and old faithful that you always rely on. It may have been there as long as you can remember, or (in the case of some of our customers) for generations. When it breaks down, production may grind to a halt, or there may be a more sentimental feeling of it being ‘the end of an era’.

Contacting the manufacturer will probably result in being told that the machine is now ‘obsolete’ and that a new and inevitably more expensive machine is needed. It’s not just the cost – a new machine will take time to install, and the operator will need time to learn how to work the new machinery. It may even result in a halt to production. Reaching out to MCI, however, may offer you another quicker, environmentally friendly, more cost-effective solution.

MCI specialises in machine automation fault-finding with industrial electronic repairs. Whether it is circuit board repair, PCB repair (printed circuit board repair), machine breakdowns, we can do it all. We have over 50 years’ experience in variable frequency drive repair, inverter repair and automation repair, to name but a few. Our engineers work from our electronics repair shop in Falkirk, Scotland and has satisfied customers all over the UK.

Today, MCI is celebrating National Periodic Table Day with the rest of the UK.

We probably all remember the periodic table from our school days, from things that burnt with a squeaky pop to smelly chemical bridges. The concept of elements is very old indeed.

The original concept of elements was conceived by the ancient Greeks. Aristotle in about 330BC. He proposed that everything was made of either water, air, earth of fire. Empedocles proposed that everything in the cosmos came from these 4 elements. It wasn’t until the middle ages that alchemists looked to elements to explain the chemical reactions they were making in their quest to make gold. Later, in 1661, Robert Boyle recognised the fundamental nature of elements.

It wasn’t until 1781, that the first version of the periodic table that we might just recognise came into being. It was created by Étienne François Geoffrey.

By 1808, John Dalton, a British Natural philosopher, created a table of the known elements according to their atomic weights. The elemental lists and tables then went through quite a number of iterations over the following years. There was much academic debate over the order of the elements on the table. Finally, in 1890, the periodic table was agreed upon. Dimitri Mendeleev, a Russian Chemist, had triumphed as the generally recognised periodic table. Amazingly, the oldest periodic table is kept in St Andrews at the Wardlaw Museum. It dates back to somewhere between 1879 and 1886.

Changes have, of course, been made over the years, but the theory behind the elemental positions remain the same.

A fascinating and surprisingly tumultuous history, the periodic table has been part of all our histories.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Today, MCI wants to celebrate the achievements of Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden Zum Gutenberg, who invented the movable-type printing press on February 3rd 1468. Gutenberg, as his name suggests, was born in what is now known as Germany. He was a man of many talents, a goldsmith, gemstone cutter, member of the militia in Strasbourg and (of course), inventor.

When Gutenberg developed the movable-type printing press, movable type was already being used in East Asia. However, Gutenberg’s invention was much faster at printing and his invention spread all over Europe – then the rest of the known world at that time.

Similar to the emergence of AI in our professional and personal lives, Gutenberg’s invention revolutionised how information was made available to the general public. Literature of all types spread throughout Europe and became much more accessible to all. The subsequent exchange of ideas across countries had a massive impact on the Renaissance, Reformation and humanist movements.

MCI has lots of experience in repairing the electrical and electronic parts of printers (although we doubt there was any of that on Gutenberg’s machine!). If you have any problems with your machinery, just give MCI a call on 01324 611371 to see how we can help keep your machinery going.

Have a great rest of the week everyone!
