As of June 1, WhatsApp has officially ended support for smartphones that can’t keep up with its latest updates.

🧓 Devices over 10 years old — like the iPhone 5s, 6, 6 Plus, and early Androids like the Galaxy S3 — can no longer run WhatsApp due to outdated security and operating systems.

🔒 Minimum requirements:

iOS 15.1 or higher

Android 5.0 or above

📲 If you're still using an older phone, WhatsApp might’ve already sent you a warning:
“Update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp.”

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is rolling out fresh new features for newer devices — from scanning documents to setting events, seeing who's online in group chats, and even pinch-to-zoom during calls.

Over 2 billion people use WhatsApp worldwide — is your phone still invited? 😬📱

🦶💡 Can a foot scanner save your heart?

A new AI-powered device might just do that.

Developed by UK start-up Heartfelt Technologies, this bedside foot scanner takes 1,800 images a minute — tracking subtle fluid build-up in your feet and ankles, a key early sign of worsening heart failure.

📉 It works without WiFi.
📦 It’s the size of a smart speaker.
📅 And most importantly, it can alert doctors up to 13 days before hospitalisation is needed.

👨‍⚕️ Cardiologists say this “virtual nurse” could transform heart failure care — helping patients stay home, stay safe, and get timely treatment.

With over 920,000 people affected in the UK alone, this tech could be a real game-changer for heart health.

Would you trust AI to monitor your health while you sleep? 😴

Weather forecasts shape our lives — from daily plans to life-saving warnings.
Now, AI is stepping into the scene.

The Met Office is building AI-powered forecasting systems with the Alan Turing Institute. Their model, FastNet, is thousands of times faster than traditional methods, making hyper-local and up-to-date forecasts a real possibility.

💨 AI could help predict:

🌀 Cyclones & hurricanes

☔ Flash floods

🌌 Even solar storms (yep — better Aurora Borealis predictions!)

But… will it replace presenters like Derek?

📺 “No one wants an AI Derek,” says Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern.

“They want the real Derek — someone who explains the data in a way that makes sense.”

🤝 For now, AI looks set to support, not replace, human forecasters.
And as our climate becomes more unpredictable, we’ll need both AI and trusted humans to keep us weather-ready.

From structuring essays to sparking creative ideas, students say AI tools like ChatGPT are transforming how they study.
22-year-old Sunjaya Phillips from Oxford Brookes University called it a “study buddy” that gives her more confidence in her work.

But it’s not all smooth sailing…

📉 Some students admit to cheating with AI — and regret it.
📈 Experts warn that relying too much on tech could mean outsourcing your learning.

So where’s the line?

👨‍🏫 Dr Charlie Simpson says:

“Used responsibly, AI helps students focus on real learning and self-development.”
But used irresponsibly, it defeats the whole point of education.

🔍 A major global survey found:
✔️ 44% of UK students are excited by AI
⚠️ 78% fear it might take their future jobs

Still, others see it differently…

🗣️ “AI is a support system,” says Sunjaya.

“It’s not here to replace you — it’s here to make you better.”

As AI becomes as essential as IT skills, the next generation of grads could be more capable than ever — if they learn to use it right.

Cutting-edge space tech, designed to detect ancient biology on Mars, is being tested in Lower Diabaig, Torridon — a region with billion-year-old rocks strikingly similar to those on the Red Planet.

🔍 The mission:
✅ Detect ancient life
✅ Analyze Martian geology
✅ Find fossils & minerals

The rover, named after pioneering scientist Rosalind Franklin, will be part of ESA’s 2028 ExoMars mission. Cameras and instruments being tested in Scotland could one day uncover proof that life once existed on Mars.

🧬 “These rocks haven’t been cooked or crushed,” said Dr Claire Cousins. “They’ve been perfectly preserved — like a slice of time. And they’re ideal for capturing signs of ancient life.”

Fun fact:
🛰️ NASA has named several Martian features after Scottish landmarks — including Torridon, Muck, Wick, and even Holyrood.

From the Highlands… to another planet. 🌍 ➝ 🔴
Science doesn’t get much cooler than this.

At , leaders from Stanford, Philips, Guthrie Clinic & McKinsey gathered to discuss how AI + holistic data could transform care:

🔬 Precision care = catching diseases before symptoms even appear
📊 AI + real-time data help doctors make smarter, faster decisions
💻 Coordinated care systems use data to send patients home sooner
🧬 Cancer treatment is becoming tailored to your genetics & imaging
📉 Clinician burnout is being reduced through better tech & operations

🚨 But the biggest takeaway?
You can’t do this alone.
From patients to tech giants — partnerships are the foundation of this transformation.

82% of healthcare pros believe AI can save lives by enabling early intervention.
And clinicians aren’t just users — they’re the gatekeepers of ethical, effective AI.

🏠✨ Smart home tech is changing how we care for older adults — and it's making independent living more possible than ever.

In West Wales, projects are now using:
🔊 Voice-activated reminders for meds
📹 Remote GP check-ups
💡 Sensors that alert caregivers if the oven’s left on or the fridge door’s open
📍 Room monitoring to ensure safety — all without invading privacy

👩‍⚕️ Minister Sarah Murphy visited Aberystwyth University’s SMART Home Lab & Penmorfa Centre to see this tech in action.

She called it a "game-changer for independence and quality of life" — giving older people the freedom to stay in their homes longer, while reducing hospital visits and care delays.

💬 “Smart care isn’t just about gadgets,” said Dr Patricia Shaw. “It’s about co-creating better lives.”

Scientists at the University of Surrey have unveiled a breakthrough in display tech that could:

✅ Slash manufacturing costs
✅ Cut environmental impact
✅ Extend battery life on phones & smartwatches

Their innovation? The Multimodal Transistor (MMT) — a smarter, simpler way to power pixels on your screen.

📱 Fewer materials
⚡ Lower energy use
🌍 Less waste during production

And the best part? It works with existing tools, so manufacturers can adopt it without starting from scratch.

🧠 Originally designed for AI, the MMT is now proving to be a powerful upgrade for screens in everyday devices.

“This is a win for manufacturers, a win for users — and a win for the environment,” said Dr Eva Bestelink.

Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and Yandex have apparently been secretly tracking Android users — even in incognito mode — according to shocking new research.

🔍 Researchers found:
– Covert scripts on Android devices
– Tracking of browser activity without consent
– Data sent back to apps like Facebook, Instagram & Yandex Maps
– Even private browsing wasn’t safe

📱 Meta reportedly tracked users on 16,000+ websites across the EU.
Yandex? Since 2017.

Google confirmed the breach and called it a violation of security principles.

🛑 Meta has now paused the feature.
🤐 Yandex denies collecting sensitive data.
🔧 Firefox & DuckDuckGo have already taken steps to block the tracking.
