Why my son’s Xbox is currently a £400 paperweight.
Before I started Reboot Builds, my son was a total console gamer. He had the PS5, the Xbox—the lot. Two years ago, I built him his first custom PC. I didn't go overboard; I just built him a solid, honest "mid-range" machine.
The results were... unexpected:
• The PS5: He sold it almost immediately. He realized the games he wanted were actually cheaper on the PC, and he didn't have to pay that monthly "subscription fee" just to play online with his mates.
• The Xbox: Honestly? It hasn't even been plugged in for about 6 months. It’s just sitting there gathering dust.
• The "Uni" Machine: This is the big one for me. He’s used that same PC to smash through his college course and now he’s just applied to Uni.
If I’d bought him a standard laptop, it would have been slow and frustrated him—this PC handled all his coursework and his gaming with absolute aplomb.
The best bit? He told me the other day it was the best gift he’s ever been given.
He’s even caught the "tech bug" and saved up to upgrade it himself recently. Because I built it to last, we didn't have to buy a whole new computer—we just swapped one part and it’s like a brand-new machine again.
The moral of the story?
You don't need to spend a fortune to get a machine that lasts for years. A well-built PC isn't just a "toy"—it’s a tool that grows with them.
