What's the cost nobody warned you about in your first year of business? 💸

Let’s be honest it's never the big stuff, is it?

It's the costs you didn't see coming like networking memberships, insurances or even the rising petrol costs for meetings that go nowhere.

This came up when Kirsty, one of our franchisees, was interviewed on a podcast recently.

She'd been looking at joining BNI and if you've ever been near a networking group, you'll know they're not cheap. Especially in year one, that's exactly the sort of cost that makes you wince and think "maybe next year."

It works in business too, but the version of it we think about most is a bit closer to home.

Being available for your family. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

It's probably the thing we hear most from our franchisees when they look back on why they made the jump. Not just the income or the freedom to be their own boss.

Those things matter of course, but they're not usually what gets said with the most feeling.

It's the school run, being home for dinner and not having to apologise again for missing something that really matters.

Suzy joined it'seeze over a decade ago after leaving teaching. She's still here and when she reflects on it, she's said before that the recurring income was the icing on the cake. 🧁

Which means something else was the cake.

Most people take annual leave to spend half term with their family.

If they want to, our franchisees just… do it. 👧👦☀️

No days to book off or inbox guilt. No "sorry, I'm on annual leave" autoresponder needed.

Because while they're off living life, our Head Office team is right there in the background, keeping websites running, handling technical queries, and making sure their clients are looked after.

That's the part nobody talks about enough.

We'd rather turn someone away than set them up to fail.

Richard came to us ready to get started and told us he probably wouldn't need the full training. And we said respectfully - that's not how this works.

Not because we're difficult, but because we've been doing this long enough to know what actually makes a franchisee successful.

Skipping the basics isn't it.

Some people might see that as a red flag. Richard saw it as the opposite.

It told him we had standards and that we'd hold them for him too, not just ourselves.

That trust goes both ways for us and always has. 🧡
