This week, .ripley and ran two days of print workshops with Year 2 and 4 at Curledge Street Primary in Paignton.

Funded by , this micro commission enabled both year groups to explore their themes - pollution (sealife and plastics) and animals (lots of snakes!) - through collagraphs and monoprint, using our portable press, rollers and relief inks.

Thankyou to all the staff for their brilliant support and happy half term everyone! ☀️

Last weekend in the workshop led a Photo etching course, Maps of Ourselves, inspired by the recent Grayson Perry exhibition .

All the participants had visited the show and used Grayson Perry’s enormous cartographic explorations of identity to create their own individual original prints, mapping relationships, memory and places - they even used maps as printing paper for their etchings.

If you missed this workshop but would like to try photo etching, get in touch to find out about our next course! [email protected]

Snapshots from this Wednesday's studio Sessions

It’s always inspiring to see what our members are creating in the studio! This week Julia was etching onto copper and mezzotint. While Alon was printing from his hand carved woodblocks in the downstairs studio.

In the screenprint studio upstairs, Tommy was building up richly layered bird and leaf screenprints, while Eleanor was experimenting with expressive mark-making on the screens.

Our studio is a space for all of this—experimentation, skill-building, and shared creative energy. If you’d like to be part of it, have a look at our membership options and see what access, facilities and opportunities you could enjoy:

Whether you’re developing a new body of work or just starting out, our studios are a warm and welcome space to be creative.

This afternoon ran a drop-in monoprint workshop at Clyston Mill in Broadclyst.

As part of National Mills Weekend we are joining to celebrate the industrial heritage of this beautiful watermill.

We also shared our maps of local paper mills created during our Paper & Print research project. Participants printed plants from the mill grounds onto Abaca paper made locally at Devon Valley Mill in Hele, the last remaining local paper mill. We love printing onto this delicate paper made from Manila h**p.

Don’t miss this annual opportunity to visit Clyston Mill. It’s open this Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1 - 4pm, and we’ll be printing again on Saturday from 1 - 3pm!

**Inspired by Grayson Perry – Create Your Own Print!**

Following the hugely inspiring Grayson Perry exhibition at RAMM, we’re excited to offer a very special photo-etching weekend at Double Elephant!

‘Maps of Ourselves’ – a Grayson Perry-inspired Photo Etching Workshop:

📅 Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th May 2026
⏰ 10am – 4pm (both days)
📍 Downstairs Studio at Exeter Phoenix

Led by expert intaglio printmaker Lynn Bailey, this weekend workshop invites you to explore the rich, layered world of photo etching—combining hand-drawn imagery with photographic and collage elements to create beautifully personal prints.

Taking inspiration from the striking photo-etched maps in Perry’s Aspects of Myself exhibition, you’ll have the chance to design your own creative “map” using your own images and ideas—or simply enjoy learning this fascinating technique.

Perfect for all levels – whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced printmaker.

What you’ll explore:
– A non-toxic photo etching process pioneered by Keith Howard
– Working with light-sensitive photo polymer plates
– Combining drawing, photography, and found materials into one print
– Creating unique, expressive layered imagery

👉 Come along, get inspired, and create something truly personal.

Spaces are limited — book now!

Pushing Drypoint to Its Limits

A brilliant, exploratory day in the print workshop this week with Simon Ripley, who shared his bold, intuitive approach to drypoint and abstraction.

Working with thin plastics, Simon demonstrated how drypoint can be pushed far beyond traditional boundaries, combining it with relief print, intaglio, carborundum, jigsaw printing and chine collé.

The results were richly coloured, highly experimental prints, with participants encouraged to work freely, play with process, and embrace unexpected outcomes. Whatever their experience level, everyone left inspired—and looking at printmaking in a completely new way.

Why not join Simon for his Abstract Printmaking 5 Week Morning Course starting Thursday 11th June '26 - Just 3 places left!
