50 million metric tons of electronic waste are being generated per year worldwide. E-waste contains valuable metals as well as hazardous substances that are often released into the environment and affect human health. Even more, waste is generated when the products are manufactured — to make a notebook computer, 1,200 kilograms of waste is produced, for example from the mining and metals industries. The environmental problems are a result of today’s linear economy where raw materials are extracted to manufacture products that often have a short lifespan before they are discarded.

As a healthier alternative, we support the circular economy concept, envisaging the increase of IT equipment lifespan, by repairs, upgrades, and finally, reuse. Electrical waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK and in the world, with discarded or hoarded household electricals estimated to cost the UK economy over £370 million per year of lost valuable raw materials such as gold, copper, aluminium and steel.
