Scotland's public sector data now has a new home.

On 25 August, data.gov.scot launched, the result of a multi-year partnership between The Scottish Government's Open Data Team and Storm ID. It replaces statistics.gov.scot with a service built on something simple but easy to get wrong: research.

Our Discovery work showed that users didn't want more features. They wanted to know what data existed, whether it was current, and what it meant, without having to decode technical structures to get there. That insight shaped every decision from Alpha through to Beta: how information is organised, how people move through the service, how complex data gets presented clearly.

We also designed for the other half of the ecosystem: the publishers who add and maintain the data. A joined-up service only works if it's easy to use on both sides.

At launch, data.gov.scot carries datasets from 14 public sector organisations, including National Records of Scotland, NatureScot, Public Health Scotland, Social Security Scotland and the Care Inspectorate.

Beta means the listening continues.

AI adoption doesn’t start with technology. It starts with knowing where AI can genuinely make a difference, and where it can’t. That was the challenge Scottish Forestry set us.

Working across teams spanning operational delivery, grants, regulation, GIS, corporate services and digital, we helped Scottish Forestry identify the strongest opportunities for AI, test them against the realities of its data and technology estate, and turn them into a practical, prioritised roadmap.

The result was Scottish Forestry’s first AI roadmap, including a prioritised backlog of AI use cases assessed for value and feasibility; technical assessment of the routes to implementation; recommendations covering governance, workforce capability and data readiness; and a sequenced delivery plan with clear measures of success

What we particularly liked about this work is that it wasn’t an exercise in finding places to 'add AI'. It was about combining staff insight, organisational priorities and technical reality to work out where AI is actually worth pursuing, and creating a responsible route from ideas to implementation.

We’re proud to have been named as a supplier on G-Cloud 15, with services available across software, infrastructure software and cloud support.

This is an important milestone as we continue to scale across the UK. As a growing SME, G-Cloud continues to give us a clear route to bring our specialist digital, data, AI and cloud capabilities to more public sector organisations - while helping government departments and other public bodies increase their engagement with SMEs and access a broader, more diverse supplier market.

That SME opportunity is significant. Around 90% of suppliers on G-Cloud 15 are SMEs, and the framework is valued at approximately £14 billion over four years, with an estimated £3 billion of public sector cloud spend each year.

It means organisations across central and local government, health, education, blue light services and the wider public sector have a straightforward, compliant route to work with Storm ID as we build on our strong track record in Scotland and expand our work across the UK.

Our Managing Director, Linsey Lydon, shares more on what G-Cloud 15 means for Storm ID, SMEs and public sector buyers:

25 years ago today, on 1 August 2001, Storm ID came into being.

We started with little more than ambition, ideas and a shared belief that digital technology could be used to make things better. From those early beginnings, we’ve grown into a business with a great deal to be proud of, thanks to our amazing team, brilliant clients and the vision of our co-founders, Jonathan Joyce, Paul McGinness, Craig Turpie and Simon Wall.

Over those 25 years, digital technology has transformed beyond recognition. Data has become central to almost everything, and AI is opening possibilities we could scarcely have imagined when we began.

But some things haven’t changed. We still love doing good work. We still believe technology should make a meaningful difference, not just for organisations, but for people and society. And we still bring the same curiosity, care and ambition to every challenge.

To everyone who has been part of the Storm journey - as a colleague, client, partner or friend - thank you. You’ve helped make Storm what it is today.
We’re immensely proud of where we’ve come from and excited about where we’re going. After 25 years, we believe our best work still lies ahead.

Here’s to the next chapter. 🎉

The fully refreshed Historic Environment Scotland website went live last month! 🎉
Following an extensive programme of research, design and collaboration, Storm ID was delighted to deliver this significant project alongside Historic Environment Scotland. A true team effort and a great example of our ONE TEAM approach in action.
We're proud to continue supporting HES as their digital delivery partner, helping them care for and champion Scotland's historic environment. It was fantastic to celebrate this milestone and the people who made it happen🥂

This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the women across Storm ID who shape our work, our culture and our impact every day. We’re also reflecting on the importance of creating a digital sector where women can thrive, lead and shape what comes next. There’s still more to do across our industry, and we’re committed to playing our part

For this year’s International Women’s Day theme, , we asked Zoe, Angelique and Asha:

- What are you proud of in your career so far?
- Inclusion matters because…
- What advice would you give to women starting out in digital / tech?

Automate tasks, not jobs
The AI opportunity for Scotland's public services
───
We’ve published new research examining where AI can most credibly reduce administrative burden across Scotland’s public services, guided by a clear principle throughout: automate tasks, not jobs.

The paper analyses 50 high volume public service workflows and focuses on capacity release, or time back. By 2030, AI could credibly release between ~16.6m and ~62.1m staff hours per year across health, education, local government, policing, justice and other public bodies, returning time to doctors, nurses, teachers, case workers and many other frontline professionals.

We hope this provides a useful input into the ongoing conversation about how Scotland moves from pilots to safely operating transformational AI enabled services at scale.

05/02/2026

Demand is rising and budgets are constrained across Scotland’s public services, but there’s a way forward.

Our forthcoming whitepaper looks at how AI can return millions of hours to Scotland’s frontline teams, identifies the common patterns across 50 high volume public services and lays out a practical roadmap for adoption.

Look out for 'Automate tasks, not jobs: The AI Opportunity for Scotland's Public Services', dropping on Monday, 9 February.
