The summer solstice is the start of the astronomical Summer and one iconic place where this is celebrated is Stonehenge which was built to align with the sun on the solstices. To celebrate here are some images of a Stonehenge replica, a WWI memorial located in Washington State, USA, taken during a Routescene UAV LiDAR survey in 2016.

Dedicated in 1918 to the servicemen of Klickitat County who lost their lives, the monument is cared for by the Maryhill Museum.

Improvement #3: Rapid data download.
Data stored on the internal solid state data storage in the LidarPod is quickly downloaded after the mission via USB3 for post-processing.

Pedro Pacheco, a GIS Officer and Drone Pilot at The HALO Trust explains a typical day flying UAV LiDAR missions across minefield sites in Angola. He describes the work he and the Drone Team undertake, the scale of the task, the challenges they face and the impact of their work on the local communities. The team use a Routescene drone LiDAR system to detect battlefield features which indicate where mines may be.

We are appreciative of every piece of media coverage to raise awareness of this humanitarian project to improve land mine clearance planning. With many thanks to GeoConnexion International magazine for publishing our latest article which describes the many challenges encountered whilst undertaking this project in Angola with The HALO Trust.

Last year was the 25 anniversary of the adoption and opening for signature of the Mine Ban Treaty as well as the 30 anniversary of the creation of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL). One of the greatest challenges is the new use of anti-personnel land mines. Casualities from land mines and explosive remnants of war have been disturbingly high for the past seven years. We sincerely hope this project and our technology can be used across the world to detect and remove land mines which cause so much damage to lives and livelihoods.

Why do I need Ground Control Targets to establish ground control in a UAV LiDAR survey?

In a LiDAR point cloud the points are discrete with space around each individual point. This makes it very difficult to identify a feature if the feature is between two points. To remove this problem, and to enable calibration and accuracy analysis to be performed, it is typical to use a flat surface and analyze each axis individually, which is mathematically far more robust.

In practice finding a flat surface in a highly vegetated undulating terrain is highly improbable! Routescene developed special LiDAR Ground Control Targets for this purpose.

Further thanks to The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction for their coverage of our new case study in Angola which established the benefits of UAV LiDAR to detect battlefield features which can be indicators of minelaying.
