Does your Internet seem to slow down at the same time every day? You're not imagining it.

One of the most common reasons for this is something called contention. In simple terms, many broadband services use shared infrastructure, which means you're sharing available bandwidth with other users in the area.

Most of the time, you probably won't notice. However, if lots of people are online at once, that shared capacity can start to get stretched. That's often why video calls become less reliable, cloud applications feel sluggish, or downloads take longer during the busiest parts of the day.

It's also why two broadband connections that advertise the same speeds can deliver very different real-world performance.

The number of users sharing that bandwidth is known as the contention ratio. Generally speaking, the fewer people sharing the connection, the more consistent your experience is likely to be.

So if your Internet always seems to struggle at certain times of the day, it might not be a fault at all. It could simply be down to how much demand is being placed on the network around you.

If connectivity is impacting your business performance and you aren’t paying a great deal for your broadband it could be that your provider is operating a higher level of contention (you only get what you pay for). It may be worth exploring networks with lower contention ratios, or moving to faster full fibre. If you are using a residential service for your business, switching to a business service could also improve the performance.

You've probably heard people talking about the UK's PSTN switch-off, but what does it actually mean for businesses?

Put simply, the old analogue phone network is being retired, and services are moving to digital alternatives.

With the switch-off deadline now set for 31st January 2027, businesses that still rely on analogue services should be thinking about what, if anything, needs to change.

The challenge is that it's not just phone lines that could be affected. Depending on your setup, things like broadband connections, alarms, payment terminals, lift emergency lines and other devices may need checking too.

We've found that many businesses know the switch-off is happening but aren't always sure whether it affects them or what they need to do next.

Sometimes when we are speaking to businesses about data backup, we hear ‘we don’t need a backup, it’s all in Microsoft 365’.

It’s a common misconception, and we can see why people think that. With your emails, files and Teams data in the cloud, it’s easy to assume they’re automatically backed up, but that’s not the case.
