You need confidence that your people can do what their role requires of them.

And your assessments should support this.

They key is whether they give people the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do, not just what they know.

Because when your assessments reflect what people can do in the real world, you’ll have stronger evidence that your people can:

✅ Apply what they’ve learned

✅ Do the job effectively

✅ Meet the required standard

✅ Demonstrate their competence

And this will give you the confidence you’re looking for.

Training completed doesn’t always mean competence proven.

The real question is: can your people actually apply what they’ve learned and do the job well. Or in PICT Offshores example…. Get Up Safe!

That’s where assessment and good evidence can make a real difference - giving you greater confidence in your people, not just a list of completed course

Have you defined what “good” looks like in your organisation?

It sounds simple, but it’s a really important place to start.

If you’re clear about what people need to know, what they need to be able to do, and the behaviours that matter, everything else becomes easier.

You can build learning around it.
You can assess against it
And you can be much clearer about whether people are actually ready to do the job. Or even better than you expected!

You can’t really build capability if you haven’t defined what good looks like. What does that look like in your organisation?

How much time do you spend thinking about capability development? It’s not something you can just leave to chance. It needs to be designed.

And that starts by defining the skills people need, understanding what they can do now, and identifying where development is needed.

This is something we helped OGICA achieve.

We worked with them to develop an online self-assessment tool - based on our digital assessment platform, eNetAssess - which assessed the skills of operational geoscientists across ten key categories.

How confident are you that your assessments are measuring the right things?

Personally, I think that’s one of the most important questions you can ask about assessment.

After all, a result only means something if the assessment behind it is valid.

That means being confident that your questions and assessment methods are actually measuring the knowledge, skills and competence they’re intended to measure.

And, importantly, having the evidence to demonstrate it.

Because confidence in your results starts with confidence in how you assess.
