While digitising tapes for customers, I was getting the occasional 8mm tape that was unplayable in my Hi8 camcorder. I then discovered there was a 3rd standard to the 8mm tape format called Digital8, which is not playable in video8 or Hi8 hardware, owing to it recording a digital signal to the tape.

So here we have a battle scarred example from eBay, which is playing Digital8 just fine, so I can now transfer these tapes to a more modern format!

Prices are £5 per tape for up to 30 minutes, and £10 for over 30 minutes.
