The Lookout, this week in UK & global hospitality 👀

Haven had a big week... pulling back on new capital while holiday-tax plans stay unresolved, but also adding its 40th park, picking up Seal Bay Resort in West Sussex from Cove.

Consolidation at the top isn't slowing down, which is exactly why the operators who own their guest relationship and their direct bookings are the ones with room to move.

Also this week:
👉 Gwynedd shelves its tourist tax after 80% of respondents pushed back
👉 OpenAI's Bret Taylor tells travel brands to stop over-scripting their AI agents
👉 Accor's AI concierge passes a million guest conversations
👉 B2B brands lean on creators to cut through "AI slop"

AI: From Magic Trick to Business Tool. Closing out XPH Edinburgh, Ian McAteer and Jay Thomson, Co-founder & CEO of Maaten, explore what AI actually means for hospitality and tourism businesses, beyond the hype and the chatbots.

Through practical examples and live demonstrations, they'll show how AI is beginning to transform everything from marketing, websites and content creation to customer insight, guest communications, internal processes and paid media.

They'll also ask the harder question: as AI makes more things faster, easier and cheaper to produce, where does human judgement, creativity and experience become even more valuable?

Introducing Sam Weston, Head of AI & Marketing at 80 DAYS editor of Hotel Speak, and one of our amazing XPH Edinburgh speakers.

His session, "The Future of Websites", looks at what happens when AI agents start browsing accommodation sites, comparing rates and attempting bookings on a guest's behalf. When they get stuck, they head straight to an OTA, a real challenge for independent brands that have fought hard for direct bookings, but a real opportunity for those who prepare early.

Tuesday 15th September, 9:30am–3:30pm at The Place, Edinburgh.
