FluidFlow The industry leading software solution for modeling any pipe flow system

19/05/2025

Every engineer handling slurry transport needs to grasp how pressure gradients change with velocity for slurries.

This animated curve reveals the flow regime transitions from:

- Stationary Bed
- Sliding Bed
- Heterogeneous Flow
- Pseudo-Homogeneous Flow

At characteristic velocities Vs, Vmin, V0, and V50 and V100, the solids behavior shifts dramatically — impacting wear, energy use, and system design.

Tip: Though operating at Vmin is the least energy-intensive, operating at or very close to this point can cause instability problems. Ensure reasonable margin to prevent instabilities while keeping energy consumption as low as practicable.

Want smoother, smarter flow systems? Start with understanding the slurry characteristic curve.

We'll be exploring this in more detail during our Advanced Training next week.

How do you model a closed-loop system in FluidFlow?

There’s no single way to do it! Our support team recommends two effective approaches:

✔ Reservoir Node Approach – Define fluid, pressure, and temperature upstream of the pump.
✔ Known Pressure Boundary Approach – Specify boundary conditions to simplify the model.

Both methods deliver the same results, so you can choose what suits your system.
