Filtering and monitoring in schools is changing.

For many years, filtering and monitoring has often been viewed primarily as an IT responsibility.

But updated DfE guidance and KCSIE 2026 make it increasingly clear that schools and Trusts need to consider filtering and monitoring as part of their wider Safeguarding, Data Protection and Governance responsibilities.

It’s no longer enough to simply ask:

“Is our web filter working?”

Schools also need to understand how alerts are reviewed, how safeguarding concerns are escalated, what personal data is being collected, whether appropriate DPIAs and privacy information are in place, and how senior leaders and governors obtain assurance that the arrangements are effective.
