It’s not exactly “breaking news” that password managers are a great idea for online security.

They create, store, and autofill strong and unique passwords for all your accounts. It’s incredibly useful to have a tool which means you never have to remember them (or scribble them down on sticky notes). 😬

But here’s the news flash: Cyber criminals know how valuable those password vaults are too – and they’re coming for them…

A new report says there’s been a three-fold increase in malware targeting password managers over the past year. For the first time ever, stealing login details from these vaults has entered the top 10 techniques in the MITRE ATT&CK Framework (a knowledge base on cyber criminals’ tactics). That’s a clear sign that attackers see password managers as prime targets. 🎯

So, why are cyber criminals targeting them now? 🤔

Simple.

If you can break into someone’s password manager, you don’t get one password, you get them all. For attackers, that’s way more efficient than trying to break into individual accounts one by one.

But the methods they’re using aren’t simple at all. Cyber criminals are deploying sophisticated tactics, like:

🚫 Memory scraping: Using malware to extract passwords directly from your device’s memory.

🚫 Registry harvesting: Scanning Windows registries for saved login details.

🚫 Cloud and local attacks: Hitting cloud-based and device-stored password vaults.

In fact, most of these attacks involve “complex, multi-stage malware” – which isn’t basic or simplistic. These attacks are stealthy, persistent, automated… and hard to detect until it’s too late.

But password managers are still one of the best tools for keeping your accounts safe. 🛡️

The key is to use them the right way. Here’s how:

✅ Never reuse passwords – ever. If attackers get into your password manager and find recycled passwords, they can waltz into multiple accounts without breaking a sweat.

✅ Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA). Even if attackers steal your password, they won’t get in without that extra code sent to your phone or email, or generated in an authenticator app.

✅ Use a strong master password. This is the one password you can’t afford to make simple. A strong passphrase (not just a word and a couple of numbers) makes it harder for attackers to brute-force their way in.

✅ Enable biometric login, if available. Face ID or fingerprint scans are tougher to crack than even the best passwords.

If your employees are using password managers (which they should be), it’s worth reviewing how they’re set up. Make sure MFA is required for every account and that master passwords are strong and unique. Also, use a business-grade password manager that lets you monitor and enforce security policies.

With the right precautions, you can keep your systems safe and your stress levels low. 😎

How confident are you in your business’s password security?

Today we celebrate a huge milestone in tech history – the anniversary of the Altair 8800 going on sale back in 1974.🥳

I’m going to take a wild guess that you might not have heard of the Altair 8800. But it’s an important one to know about!

Why?

It was the machine that sparked the personal computer (PC) revolution.

This early computer laid the groundwork for the tech we now use every day in our businesses. It became a hit after being featured in Popular Electronics magazine, which led to more than 5,000 units being sold in less than a year.

The Altair 8800 wasn’t much by today’s standards. It was a big box that used toggle switches for input and LEDs for output. But it ignited the imagination of a generation of tech enthusiasts and entrepreneurs.

Among its fans were Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Inspired by the Altair, the pair developed the BASIC programming language for it; eventually using this software to build Microsoft.

It also inspired the legendary Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who started Apple after seeing the Altair’s potential.

This simple machine shows us what’s possible when innovation meets passion. For business owners, it’s a reminder that small beginnings can lead to breakthroughs that change entire industries.

Have you heard of the Altair 8800 before today?

Here’s an important warning about something that could affect your business: A security flaw has been found in Microsoft Bookings.🤯

The popular tool is used for scheduling appointments – but the flaw could allow scammers to create unauthorised accounts and get hold of false certificates.

Why should you be worried?👀

If scammers create fake accounts pretending to be senior people in your business, they could trick your employees into sharing sensitive information. This could give them access to your business systems and even let them reset passwords, locking you out of all your accounts.

If your business uses Microsoft 365, it’s doubly important to be aware of this issue. The security flaw comes from a feature in Microsoft Bookings called “Shared Booking Pages”, which is usually turned on by default under the Microsoft 365 licence.

When someone creates a shared booking page, it creates a new account without going through the usual security checks. This is how scammers can slip through the cracks.

This security alert is a reminder of how important it is to keep an eye on the tools we use every day. Check if you’re using Microsoft Bookings in your business and consider disabling it if you don’t need it.

It’s also a good idea to keep your systems updated and have an IT expert (like us) review your security settings. It can go a long way towards protecting your business.

If this sounds a bit overwhelming, don’t worry. A P Systems can help, get in touch.

Today marks the 44th anniversary of Apple’s historic Initial Public Offering (IPO), with the tech giant selling shares of its stock to the public for the first time.🥳

Apple sold 4.6 million shares at $22 (£17.60) each, and stock closed at $29 (£23.20). This resulted in Apple being valued at an impressive $1.778 billion (£1.42 billion), and it made millionaires out of more than 40 employees and investors.

The Apple co-founders also saw their own stock values go up, with Steve Jobs’s shares reaching $217 million (£173.8 million), and Steve Wozniak’s shares hitting $116 million (£92.9 million).

This was the largest IPO since Ford’s in 1956, and it highlighted the huge potential to create wealth and redefine markets through the tech industry.

Apple’s IPO was only the beginning. It sparked a tech revolution that inspired innovation across businesses all over the globe.

Today, it reminds us how investment in technology can change everything – not just in terms of value, but also in terms of impact. It’s a great lesson for businesses.

Where do you think technology will take us next?🤔

We all know that using multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a good way to help keep your business data secure, right? It adds an extra layer of security to your accounts, as you need your password AND a code to log in.

Well, here’s some worrying news: Cyber criminals have recently been finding ways to get around MFA.

How are they doing it?🤔

When you log in to your email, a session cookie gets created and saved in your browser. This makes it easy to stay logged in without having to re-enter your password.

Scammers are now stealing these cookies to get around security measures. This could mean your accounts are at risk, even with MFA enabled.

If cybercriminals get into your accounts, they could access sensitive data and use it for identity theft or phishing attacks (where they use fake emails to trick you into sharing information).

To help keep your business protected, make sure you’re using strong security software. Always keep devices and software updated, and log out of important accounts when they’re not in use.

Another tip? Don’t use the “remember me” option on shared or public computers, and only interact with secure websites that have a “HTTPS” address.

Does your team need a refresher on cybersecurity awareness? We can help with that. Get in touch.

New malware alert!🚨

A new type of malicious software called Pronsis Loader has been discovered. What makes this one unique is that it’s able to get around traditional security software by using a lesser-known programming language.

The language it uses is called JPHP, which is a version of PHP (a language usually used for websites). It’s rarely seen in malware, so security systems don’t recognise it as easily.

Because Pronsis Loader disguises itself as legitimate software, it can be tougher to detect. And if it sneaks into your system, it can download ransomware, spyware, or other harmful software – leaving your business data vulnerable.

Malware like this can leave you facing serious consequences, including data breaches and significant financial loss.

You should consider using advanced security measures, like behaviour-based detection. This doesn’t just look at the software’s code; it also watches for unusual behaviour, which can help spot malware before it causes damage.

Making sure you have access to the latest threat intelligence can also help you to stay one step ahead of these ever-evolving attacks.

As cyber criminals become more creative, it’s important to keep your defences just as smart. We can help you do that, get in touch.

Meta’s latest project has hit an unexpected snag… in the form of a bumblebee!🐝

Turns out, not even the biggest tech forces in the world can overcome the force of nature.

Meta were planning to build a nuclear-powered data centre, designed to meet the massive energy demands of AI tech. But a rare species of bumblebee was found on the site, and it’s forced Meta to put their plans on hold.

AI eats up huge amounts of energy – and tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, and Google are trying to be environmentally conscious; hunting for cleaner, reliable power to keep their data centres running. For instance, Google just partnered with a nuclear startup to power its AI work with “24/7 carbon-free energy”.

So, what’s the takeaway?

As AI grows, so does the need for sustainable, energy-efficient options. And this is something every business should keep in mind as we look to the future.

Isn’t it fitting that the humble bumblebee reminds us of the importance of balance between tech and nature?
