As we close in on the Christmas shutdown Dy-tech, like many companies, generally experience an upturn in the order book as clients hedge their bets against a buoyant last quarter. This year has been no exception and with only 6 full working weeks left in 2017 the pressure is on manufacturing to deliver products both sides of the festive period.
For many companies, Christmas is the one time of the year that factories fully close giving everyone a well deserved break. Dy-tech is no exception and I always look forward to this time of year, diverting the phone and taking time out to spend with family and friends. It's equally important to me that our staff take the opportunity of a long break, many will be travelling abroad to visit family and friends and so the extended Christmas shutdown is often the only time of year they can in many cases travel home.
But before all of the merriment and mince pies, customer orders have to be fulfilled and this year the pressure is certainly on. I have reported in the past that an upturn in global manufacturing and particularly electronics has caused major upset in the supply chain. Lead-times for critical parts are moving further and further into the distance and so keeping on top of supplier orders becomes a full time job. Spurred on (apparently) by a massive surge in demand for environmentally friendly electric vehicles the automotive industry is hoovering up component inventory like never before. There appears to be no sign that this is a temporary spike and so semiconductor manufacturers, who mothballed wafer fab plants some years back, are now bringing them back on line to cope with demand. Long may that continue!
On the flip-side, the present lack of clarity over Brexit will surely come into focus next year as we close in on that March 2019 leaving date. Whether a soft or hard Brexit, changes to UK manufacturing and many other sectors and on their way. All we can do is be vigilant, keep customer focused and quality oriented and then hopefully, as the saying goes, the business will take care of itself.
Wishing you all a very festive few weeks ahead.
