TWDA - From hard-working websites and proper logos through to photography, marketing, and all the bits in between — we cover what you actually need to grow a business. TWDA is the work of Hexham based media designer, Terence Walsh.

” I have been working as a professional freelance designer for the last 15 years, providing design services to the likes of Smith & Nephew, BP, Local Authorities to many smaller and local Hexham based businesses. I believe that design has to happen face to face, it’s those small details, raised eyebrows or intakes of breath that let you know what the client really thinks. I will take care of everything from start to finish. Simply saying ” We’ve had the same site for years, its not pretty but it works!” isn’t good enough, a poorly designed, outdated site will actually do your image harm and may cost you in lost sales, if your site looks tired and exhausted then so does your business. I’m more than happy to offer advice to anyone, just drop me a line. “

Date for the diary: Hexham Christmas Market is on Saturday 12 December 2026.

Over a hundred stalls spread right across the town: the Market Place, the Abbey and its grounds, and inside the Queen's Hall too, with the Farmers' Market on the same day. Free to get in, and very, very busy.

Our tips: the Abbey doesn't run a ticket system, so everyone is let in at once and it gets packed. Get there early, and think twice about taking a pushchair through at peak time. Parking is easier this year, with free town parking down by the new Travelodge and more behind the new bus station. And after all that shopping, lunch at The Beaumont Hotel opposite the Abbey is lovely at Christmas.

Two-minute test for anyone running a pub, hotel, B&B or holiday let: search your own business name on your phone right now.

Are the opening hours right? Does the phone number get answered? Do the photos look like the place today, or like a customer's blurry photo from 11pm? Is there anything for Christmas yet?

If anything made you wince, our Google Business Profile guide has a 20-minute fix list: https://twda.co.uk/google-business-profile-guide-pubs-hotels/

How many customers have driven out to your pub on a Sunday and found Google still showing last summer's opening hours? You'll never know, because nobody rings to complain. They just go somewhere else.

Your Google Business Profile is free, takes an afternoon to get right, and ten minutes a week to keep right. Our new guide walks you through it, from verification to photos to special hours for Christmas and New Year.

Quick test for anyone running a pub, restaurant, hotel or holiday let: open your own website on your phone and try to book a Christmas table or a festive break.

How many taps did it take? Could you find the menu? Did the booking button go somewhere useful? If any of that was awkward for you, it's awkward for your customers, and it's costing you bookings this week.

Seven things to check before October: https://twda.co.uk/is-your-website-ready-for-christmas-bookings/

The week between Christmas and New Year is one of the busiest of the year for holiday lets and hotels in Northumberland, and people are booking it now.

If your website promises a "festive break" but doesn't say which dates, what's included or what it costs, all it generates is emails. Decide on the package, the minimum stay and whether Christmas Day itself is bookable, then make sure your booking calendar and your website say the same thing.

Tip five in our September checklist: https://twda.co.uk/is-your-website-ready-for-christmas-bookings/

Using AI to write your posts? Here's the six-line house policy we'd give any small business:

1. AI can draft; a person always edits and approves before anything goes out.
2. Every claim in AI-written copy is checked. Can't prove it? It goes.
3. Realistic AI images of your premises, products or people are labelled as AI-generated.
4. AI is never used to write or "improve" reviews or testimonials.
5. No customer personal data goes into an AI tool.
6. Logos and anything you want to own are made by people.

That covers the EU AI Act, the UK ad rules, the fake reviews ban, GDPR and copyright in one go. The full plain-English guide is on the TWDA blog: https://twda.co.uk/using-ai-to-write-your-posts-eu-uk-rules-risks/

TWDA turned 27 this month.

We registered as a limited company in 1999, when most businesses didn't have a website, Google was a year old, and "mobile-friendly" wasn't a phrase anyone had said out loud. Since then we've built and looked after sites for pubs, hotels, holiday lets, schools, charities, shops and surgeries across Northumberland and the North East, and a good number of the first clients are still with us.

Twenty-seven years mostly comes down to two things: answering the phone, and building sites that still work when the trend they were built in has moved on.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted us with their business along the way. Here's to the next stretch.

Last weekend of Heritage Open Days, and Northumberland has saved some of the best for last.

Alnwick opens up a run of its historic buildings on Saturday 19 September, and Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island is free on Saturday 19 (12–5pm) and Sunday 20 (12:30–5pm). If you're heading to Holy Island, check the causeway crossing times before you leave the house, not when you get to Beal.

It's here. Heritage Open Days runs from today until 20 September, and this weekend you can get into places for free that normally charge — Gibside, The Bowes Museum, and a long list of churches, halls, houses and hidden corners across Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Northumberland.

A tip from experience: the big National Trust sites get busy on the Saturday, so go early or pick a weekday date if you can.

Heritage Open Days starts this Friday, and the first weekend is a big one.

Gibside is free to walk in from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September, and The Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle opens its doors for nothing on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13. Both normally charge, so if you've been meaning to go, this is the weekend.
