Finding the upside in flu? 🤒

Sitting in bed watching the incredible wintry morning light moving across the sky. The sun glinting on the remaining autumn leaves and sparkling on the frost. Magic.

Buzzing with excitement. It’s the book launch of The Roar of Her Story later. So it seems a good time to tell the story of the book cover.

wanted to evolve her brand to demonstrate her growth, confidence and clearer sense of who she is and her value.

My process tapped into Hilary's rebellious spirit and defined how that needed to feel bolder than the current branding.

Hilary means business. This was all about action and change. It felt radical.

I knew the manifesto needed to be printed. With real ink, on paper. For my own sense of integrity I had to find a way to do this without extending the scope we’d agreed.

Creative collaboration creates sparks… that can turn into exciting infernos.

I took this idea to print maker Claire Baillie , who helped me to bring the manifestos to life, there was plywood, laser cutting, numerous tests, colour mixing and an 18th century press.

This isn’t digital. There was imperfections and trial and error. And so much passion.

After much hard work (but no sweat because we’re ladies ;-) we produced 3 awesome rally cries – to engage the audience and create ripples of change.

But what about the book?
As you might have noticed, my excitement levels were a bit off the scale by now... so I couldn’t leave the book cover out. I knew it wasn’t part of my brief, but it felt foolish to leave it out. So we also printed the cover.

So far this doesn’t seem so radical.
Except that i didn’t tell Hilary any of this.

We agreed the strategic brief, mood boards and creative direction, but I didn't share what I was upto in the print studio.

The creative drive was a little like being possessed. I felt this had to come into being and there wasn’t time to pause. It was ridiculously wild, bold, and not the way I would ever normally work!

Thankfully, Hilary was blown away with the concepts and the passion in the projects – it was even a little emotional! The belief in her project and mission gave her such confidence along with the way it then seamlessly translated across all her entire brand.

I’m not generally a fan of giveaway promo items – my waste conscious soul gives me a hard time about them. So it was quite delightful to have the opportunity to print something functional and useful to showcase book and my work.

A bookmark to go in a book – what better pairing? And personally I always need one, because I have so many books I’m dipping in and out of at once!

When it’s no longer useful it can be recycled. It’s already made of recycled unicorn stock (best paper name 🦄) and printed with vegan inks thanks to .works who also printed these luscious eco friendly stickers, all packed minimally, yet substantially and without a hint of pesky plastic about.

On Friday I had the privilege of hearing introduce and read from her book at the in Bath.

Superbly facilitated by , she suggested a couple of insightful questions to ask the person beside you.

What followed is something you can’t quite describe, an energy, buzz of ideas, sparks of connection and an opening of doors that sometimes you don’t even realise are shut.

It sounds so simple, yet it’s not. When the world around you reverberates messages to make you smaller, quieter, measures you aesthetically, undermines and belittles you, it’s hard to find a voice. Do you share your opinion? Because it’s highly likely that at best it’ll be ignored or derided. And most certainly its value will be measured against values that aren’t your own.

It’s something I’ve felt passionate about, shied away from, felt full of rage and ultimately, found I had to forge my own path and business.

So here is just one of my many opinions. My voice, your voice, our voices matter.

Watch out. I’m practicing my roar and it’s getting louder.

It’s here. The Roar of Her Story book.

It was a great honour to design the cover for this book, The Roar of Her Story by Hilary Salzman.

It’s always exciting and daunting to see a final design in print. This one was amplified even more – because I loved the project so much, couldn’t wait to actually read the book and, because with the help of the amazing Claire Elizabeth Baillie-Cloke, had already hand printed the design for the cover. Let’s call it a double-print, so double the excitement!

Funny story. I wasn’t actually commissioned to design it.

I got so carried away with Hilary’s brand identity that it evolved into a whole other printing project.

But that’s a story for another day…
