Here at PC Repairs Online, we love being busy, but in the right way! We can remove all nasty bugs, and solve hundreds of PC problems, but here are our festive tips and tricks to help you stay safe online this christmas and help better manage your computer system(s).. so here they are...
Christmas Do's and Dont's to help keep the life of your PC in tip top condition....
DO
- Install CCleaner from Piriform. After each browsing session clear your cookies and junk..
- Back up those all important photos into a folder, clearly marked. We like to put the month and year at the end of each folder so we can find it easily.
- Keep your desktop, clutter free and organised. too many icons on your desktop uses memory and slows your machine down. lean and mean is the way to go!
- Save yourself time, effort and money by installing a free anti-virus software and malware software. NOD32, AVG, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware are all recommended good choices.
- Install the latest version of Teamviewer, but never give out your details, unless you trust the person. Teamviewer is free for private home use, and allows more tech savvy family members to solve hundreds of problems if they are miles away by controlling your computer. Again common sense prevails!
- Use, and keep up to date, the latest operating system and web browser. We recommend Firefox and NoScript and Flashblock plugins.
- Upgrade your memory/motherboard/CPU/Hard drive...
If you already own a fairly current power supply, case, case fans, and graphics card, simply upgrading the Motherboard/CPU/Memory and changing your boot/OS drive from an optical to a solid state drive will dramatically increase the power and speed of your PC.
- Change your passwords and login details every 6 months, and keep a written down record only if absolutely necessary. Thieves are good at guessing your family pets names, childrens names, the town you were born in.. All of these details, especially on social media, are readily available..
DONT
- never. ever click on any link in any email. These days, we almost always say, no matter if its from Argos, Lloyds, or even someone you know. Never click on any email link. Whole companies and corporations have been compromised from someone innocently clicking a link and entering their lost/updated passwords. If the bank or company is that keen to get hold of you, they will write, or call you. (even then we recommend not taking any calls or giving out any information)
- Just like bad neighbourhoods, don't venture to websites that you don't know or aren't sure of. Family members innocently suggesting a new website, or "fun" game to play online, check it out first. We sound like party poopers, but we get more trojan removal requests than ever before.. unfortunately, by trusting nothing, and never clicking on anything, you do stay safe.
- If in doubt, speak to us, or call someone.
- Cybercrime and real life crime goes hand in hand these days.. If you are visiting family and friends, wait till you get back to post up those all important social media photos and videos.. and make sure your privacy settings are set to "friends" only. Publicly telling everyone what a nice time you are having in Australia means a burglar can, in a few clicks, obtain your address and go shopping at your expense.
Stay safe, and we look forward to seeing you in 2017!
