Driving Change with a New Hybrid Fleet

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd is replacing its fleet of Peugeot Partner vans with the new Toyota Corolla Commercial, the UK’s first self-charging full hybrid electric van.

The outgoing Peugeot fleet, delivered in 2022, has served the business well, but the new Toyota Corolla Commercial represents a meaningful step forward. Developed by Toyota Manufacturing UK at its Burnaston plant, the Corolla Commercial’s 1.8 litre hybrid powertrain allows the van to run on electric power in EV mode, automatically switching between electric and petrol running depending on battery charge and driving conditions. Toyota estimates combined cycle fuel economy of up to 62.7mpg, with CO2 emissions as low as 102g/km, a significant improvement on the outgoing diesel fleet.

As with the previous fleet, the new vans have been supplied through our long-standing partnership with Northgate Vehicle Hire, who will maintain the vehicles under a lease agreement throughout their time with SPUK.

The move forms part of SPUK’s wider commitment to reducing its carbon footprint across every part of the business, not just the materials we supply, but the way we operate day to day. Our calculations estimate the new hybrid fleet will deliver a carbon emission saving of around 120 tonnes of CO2 compared to the outgoing diesel vans, a significant step forward in reducing the company’s environmental impact.

This kind of thinking is already well established elsewhere in the business. SPUK holds significant stocks of EMSTEEL Group GreenSheetPile™, produced using recycled scrap and 100% renewable energy. Steel is also one of the most recyclable materials in construction, with sheet piles routinely recovered and reused across multiple projects rather than discarded at the end of a scheme. Reducing environmental impact isn’t a single initiative at SPUK, it’s a thread that runs through the vehicles we drive, the steel we supply, and the way projects are delivered from start to finish.

SPUK has extensive experience delivering sustainable sheet piling solutions across the UK. To discuss your project requirements, contact the team on 01772 794141 or email [email protected].

Sheet Piling Holds the Road at Llanfechain

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd has completed the sheet piling works for a permanent retaining wall at Llanfechain in Powys, installing 30 linear metres of 10 metre for main contractor G.T. Davies to stabilise the slope supporting a public highway on behalf of Powys County Council.

The setting determined the installation method. The road is narrow and the pile line runs beneath overhanging trees, which left no headroom for a mast mounted rig and no width to set one up in. Excavator mounted equipment was the sensible answer on both counts. A MOVAX Oy side grip rig carries the vibratory hammer on the excavator arm, so it works under a low canopy and within a carriageway width rather than needing clear height above the pile and a platform beside it. Provision was also made for impact driving individual piles to level where the ground demanded it, which meant a hard pile could be dealt with as it arose rather than becoming a return visit.

Rural highway schemes carry a particular kind of pressure. In mid Wales a single road is often the only practical route between villages, and the diversion when it closes is measured in miles rather than streets. Slope movement beneath a carriageway on that kind of route is not simply an engineering problem for the local authority, it is a problem for everyone who relies on the road to reach a school, a surgery or a place of work. Getting the wall in and the road reopened is the whole objective, and the piling is the part of that sequence with the least tolerance for delay.

suits highway slope stabilisation for the same reasons it suits flood work. A single driven element provides the retaining structure without the excavation, formwork and curing time a concrete solution demands, which matters when the wall is being built in a live highway corridor and the programme is counted in days.

Owning our plant and holding our own steel is what made the response time possible. With an extensive fleet of piling rigs and equipment and a large stock of piles held in the UK, we were able to mobilise quickly rather than waiting on hire availability or a mill order, and the crew was on site for just two days. On a scheme where a public highway is compromised and a local authority is carrying the consequences daily, the time between instruction and completion is the measure that matters most.

If you are responsible for a road affected by slope movement, we can look at the options with you. Call 01772 794141 or send the details to [email protected]

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd Heads to the Scottish Construction Summit

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd will be exhibiting at the Scottish Construction Summit in Glasgow on 22nd October 2026. You will find the team on Stand 26.

SPUK is marking its 30th anniversary this year, and Scotland has been part of the story from the very beginning.

Established in 1996 and headquartered in Preston, Lancashire, SPUK has spent three decades delivering specialist piling across the UK. Preston sits directly on the M6 corridor, which keeps our plant, piles and site teams within easy reach of the Central Belt and the wider Scottish road network. As far back as the late 1990s we were delivering works at Inverkip Marina for William Harte Construction and a pumping station project at Balmossie for Bechtel Morrison. Those early water and utilities commissions established our credentials in regulated industries north of the border, and the work has continued steadily ever since across flood defence, water and wastewater infrastructure, marine and waterway schemes and general civil engineering, from the Borders to the Highlands.

Thirty years on we remain the same business at our core, a specialist rather than a generalist. Driven steel piling is our specialism, from sheet piles and tubular piles to the anchorages that hold them, and the depth of capability that comes with that focus is what sets us apart. We operate the UK's only Long Reach Telescopic Leader Rigs and a fleet of silent pile presses for noise and vibration sensitive environments, supported by an in-house design team and around 21,000 tonnes of EMSTEEL Group GreenSheetPile™ held in stock, produced using recycled scrap and 100 per cent renewable energy.

More recent Scottish work has included major flood alleviation and environmental resilience schemes. The Comrie Flood Alleviation Scheme in Perthshire was a £27 million project delivered on behalf of Balfour Beatty for Perth and Kinross Council, where we installed 2.8 kilometres of permanent steel sheet pile flood walls protecting over 189 homes against a 1 in 200 year flood event. It remains one of the most significant Scottish commissions in our history.

Our Scottish work is not limited to the mainland, or to flood defence. The upgrade of Tarbert Ferry Terminal on the Isle of Harris demonstrated our willingness to work in some of Scotland's most remote and logistically demanding locations, while bridge schemes at Kincardine on the Forth and the Clyde Bridge in Lanarkshire called for tubular piling and cofferdam work in live river environments.

Further south, we have completed our sheet piling works at Annan in Dumfries and Galloway, part of the ongoing £15.6 million community led regeneration of the town's historic harbour on the Solway Firth, a scheme driven by the local community rather than a developer.

The pipeline continues to grow. While the summit is taking place our crews will be at work on the Bridge of Allan Flood Protection Scheme near Stirling, a £16 million Stirling Council project on the Allan Water that will protect 87 properties from flooding.

If you are attending and have a scheme you would like to talk through, come and find us on Stand 26, or get in touch beforehand on 01772 794141 and we will make sure someone is free when you arrive.

Junction 10 Gets the Green Light and Green Steel

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd has successfully completed works at Junction 10 of the M23 near Crawley, West Sussex, delivering permanent sheet piling works as part of a significant junction improvement scheme constructed by Breheny Civil Engineering.

The M23 Junction 10 improvement scheme was designed to increase capacity at the junction to relieve current and future congestion. The project is a joint venture between Persimmon Homes and Taylor Wimpey, in conjunction with National Highways and West Sussex County Council, and forms part of the wider Forge Wood housing development in Crawley. Construction works commenced in February 2026, with completion scheduled for Spring 2027.

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd were engaged by Breheny Civil Engineering Ltd in 2022 to assist with the design, supply and installation of sheet piles to form four permanent retaining walls to enable the widening of the existing congested highway.

Through early contractor involvement (ECI), SPUK were able to propose a suitable and efficient sheet pile installation methodology, produce a detailed sheet pile design in accordance with a Highways Approval in Principle document, offer EMSTEEL GreenSheetPile™ ESZ section sheet piles and support the development of the temporary works and piling platform design for the constrained site.

SPUK developed a value-engineered installation methodology to suit sheet pile installation through the challenging ground conditions on site, which comprised competent sandstone, siltstone and mudstone. A high torque CFA (Continuous Flight Auger) rig was deployed to pre-auger the full length of all four pile lines prior to sheet pile installation. One of SPUK’s Long Reach Telescopic Leader Rigs was also deployed on the scheme to drive the piles to design toe level. To accommodate both rigs, SPUK worked closely with the client to develop a value-engineered temporary works solution. Four initial low-level piling platforms facilitated the CFA pre-augering operations, after which four high-level installation platforms were constructed at existing carriageway level to take advantage of the 8.1m reach capability of SPUK’s Long Reach Leader Rig.

Uniquely in the UK, SPUK operates two Long Reach Leader Rigs, purpose-designed and built specifically for highway schemes and similar infrastructure projects. The extended reach of the rig allows sheet piles to be installed from a greater horizontal distance, reducing the need for temporary working platforms, minimising traffic management requirements and delivering measurable savings in both cost and programme.

In total, the works encompassed 522.2 linear metres of permanent sheet piling across the four structures. Over 1,100 tonnes of permanent EMSTEEL GreenSheetPile ESZ section sheet piles were installed to design toe level through the competent bedrock, the longest sheet pile measuring 17.5m.

Highway schemes present particular challenges for sheet pile installation. Live traffic management, constrained working areas, phased road closures and the need to maintain public safety throughout construction all add layers of complexity that demand careful planning and experienced delivery teams. SPUK has an established track record on highway and junction improvement schemes across the UK, including previous works on the M62, M1, A63 and A59, and the M23 Junction 10 project is a further demonstration of that capability. The project also demonstrates the value of Early Contractor Involvement (ECI), with the works delivered on programme. By developing the permanent sheet pile design and value-engineered temporary works solution at an early stage, SPUK was able to deliver significant cost savings for the client.

Turning the Tide at Annan Harbour

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd was appointed by Cubby Construction Services to carry out permanent steel sheet piling works at Annan Harbour, Dumfries and Galloway, forming a critical element of one of the most significant community-led regeneration projects undertaken in Scotland.

Annan is a historic town on the Solway Firth, with a thousand-year heritage of fishing, trade and shipbuilding. A changing focus over the latter part of the 20th century left the harbour in decline, and a community-led effort, spearheaded by Annan Harbour Action Group (AHAG), spent years working to restore it to productive use. The regeneration project, with a total cost of £15.6 million, delivered a new heritage visitor centre, community hub, café, water sports lagoon and environmental improvements, with the wider regeneration project continuing through to anticipated completion in spring 2028.

SPUK’s scope covered the supply and installation of EMSTEEL Group GreenSheetPile™ EZ26-700 steel sheet piles to form a new impounding cofferdam across the existing river, creating a dry working environment to allow the follow-on construction activities to be carried out safely and efficiently. The cofferdam comprised 53 pairs of 8.50 metre long sheet piles, forming north and south elevations of 35 metres each, with a 3.70 metre closing section across the end. Sheet piles were installed using a 300-tonne crawler crane and crane-suspended vibratory hammer.

The scope also included a single level of 25 no. ASF tie bars at 1.40 metre horizontal centres to provide lateral restraint to the cofferdam, structural seals to the existing river wall at two locations, and the flame cutting and welding of openings in the sheet piles to accommodate sluice drains. Wadit clutch sealant was applied to the sheet pile interlocks to assist with dewatering within the cofferdam, an important consideration on a tidal riverside site where watertightness was critical to the success of the dry working environment.

Working on a tidal river within a high-profile, community-focused regeneration scheme demanded careful planning and considered ex*****on. The cofferdam works were a foundational element of the wider construction programme, and their success was essential to the delivery of the project as a whole.

SPUK has extensive experience delivering sheet pile cofferdams and waterside works across a wide range of marine, river and waterway environments throughout the UK. To discuss your project requirements, contact the team on 01772 794141 or email [email protected].

Driving Change at the Middlewich Eastern Bypass

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd has been appointed by Balfour Beatty to carry out temporary steel sheet piling works at two key structures forming part of the Middlewich Eastern Bypass, a major new road scheme being delivered on behalf of Cheshire East Council.

The Middlewich Eastern Bypass will construct a new 1.6-mile two-way carriageway connecting Pochin Way in the north to the A533 Booth Lane to the south, including a new bridge over the Trent and Mersey Canal and a new bridge over the Sandbach to Northwich railway line. The scheme has long been sought by residents and businesses in the area, with Middlewich town centre suffering from severe congestion at the junction of the A54 and A533. Once complete, the bypass is expected to unlock land for up to 1,950 new homes, create up to 6,500 local jobs, and improve access to the M6 and key employment sites. The £54 million project was awarded to Balfour Beatty through the SCAPE framework, with main construction commencing in May 2026 and completion expected in Summer 2028.

SPUK’s scope covers the supply, installation and extraction of temporary steel sheet piles to form earthworks support at the abutments of both new bridge structures. Works at Tetton Railway Bridge have been completed, with sheet piles installed to support both the east and west abutments during construction of the new railway crossing. Works are currently underway at the Trent and Mersey Canal Bridge, where sheet piles are being installed to support the east and west abutments of the new canal crossing.

The two structures presented distinct methodological challenges. At the Trent and Mersey Canal Bridge east abutment, the scale of the works required a combination of temporary and sacrificial EMSTEEL Z section GreenSheetPile™ at depths of up to 10 metres. At the Tetton Railway Bridge east abutment, the proximity of an existing gas service ruled out vibratory installation, and SPUK’s silent, vibration-free Hydro-Press system was specified instead, with these piles becoming sacrificial on completion. Pre-augering using a 600mm diameter auger was carried out in advance of pile installation at both structures to suit the ground conditions across the site.

Working across two sensitive structures in close proximity to an operational railway and a navigable canal, on a scheme of this scale and public significance, demands careful methodology selection and precise coordination of plant and programme. These are the conditions in which SPUK’s breadth of installation capability and technical experience come into their own.

SPUK has extensive experience delivering temporary sheet piling solutions on highway, bridge and infrastructure schemes across the UK. To discuss your project requirements, contact the team on 01772 794141 or email [email protected].

Sheet Piling on Home Ground at Cardinal Newman College

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd has completed temporary sheet piling works at Cardinal Newman College in Preston, for main contractor Spencer Wilkinson Construction Ltd, supporting the college’s continued investment in its campus.

The scheme comprised a temporary sacrificial sheet piled retaining wall measuring 17.5 linear metres, formed in plain uncoated steel using used ESU23-750 sections. The wall was built in two pile lengths to suit the retained profile, with 12 metre piles across the first 10 metres from the end of the existing wall and 10 metre piles over the remaining 7.5 metres.

Access dictated the installation method. The working area at the college left too little room for a conventional leader rig, and no mast mounted equipment could have reached the pile line without enabling works the site had no space to accommodate. The only viable option was an excavator mounted Movax side grip rig, which carries the vibratory hammer on the excavator arm rather than a mast. That allows the machine to turn, reach and reposition within a confined footprint, and it ensured the pile line was ithin a suitable reach of the existing site levels. Sites like this are exactly what excavator mounted equipment exists for, and having it in our own fleet meant the constraint set the method rather than ruling the job out.

The piles installed were used ESU23-750 sections drawn from our own temporary works stock at Preston. These are piles that have already served on previous schemes, been recovered, inspected and returned to stock, and have now gone into the ground at Cardinal Newman for a second working life. A sacrificial wall stays in place once the permanent works are complete, so there is no third life for this steel, but reusing sections that already existed avoided calling on new material for a wall that was always going to be left behind. Matching used stock to the right application is one of the quieter advantages of holding around 21,000 tonnes of our own steel, and on a temporary wall it is often the most sensible answer on both cost and carbon.

This one was close to home. Our head office is in Chorley and our Warehouse, Maintenance and Training Hub is at Red Scar in Preston, so a college a few miles down the road is a welcome addition to the order book. Cardinal Newman is one of the highest performing sixth form colleges in Lancashire, and the work forms part of the investment programme the college has been running to keep pace with rising student numbers.

Sheet piling is often the shortest activity on a programme and the one with the least room for slippage. Matching the rig to the space available is what keeps a compact scheme like this moving.

Two Apprentices, Two Degrees, One Team

In July 2026, Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd had double cause for celebration. Two members of the team, Leighton Carney in the commercial department and Alex Rothwell in design, graduated from the University of Lancashire within days of each other, both completing degrees they had studied for while working full-time at SPUK. It is the kind of outcome that doesn’t happen by accident.

Leighton joined the business in April 2021 as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, fresh from school and with little idea of what a career in specialist piling contracting might look like. Alex followed in September 2022, having completed his first year of Civil Engineering at university as a full-time student before transitioning into the apprenticeship route. Different entry points, different disciplines, but a shared experience of learning on the job while building towards something.

Both will tell you that the support around them made the difference. Leighton remembers time being made by directors and managers whenever he had questions, and credits every colleague with teaching him something along the way. Alex points to specific individuals, Andrew, Stuart and Oliver, whose guidance has been particularly valuable as he has moved closer to professional qualification. “Every project teaches you something new,” he says. “Even after four years, no two projects are the same and there’s always an opportunity to learn something new.”

Their day-to-day roles couldn’t be more different in character. Leighton’s world is commercial, managing applications for payment, valuing additional works, reviewing contract terms, navigating disputes and working towards final accounts. He now manages his own projects from start to finish, a long way from the small, heavily reviewed tasks he was given when he first arrived. He has also recently taken on a mentoring role with Kai, SPUK’s new Apprentice QS, who starts his first year at university in September. Alex’s work is technical, developing contract designs and value-engineered solutions, with growing autonomy to progress schemes that would once have required much closer oversight.

Both point to standout projects when asked about highlights. For Leighton, it was the Holborn Enabling Works, a large, technically specialised scheme that got him out of the office and onto site, working alongside the main contractor’s team and broadening his understanding of how sheet piling projects come together in practice. For Alex, it was Imperial Road in Fulham, a complex design commission involving multiple revisions, client liaison and coordination with ground anchor specialists and Byland Engineering. Seeing the silent pile press in action at Belvedere Academy in 2023 also sticks in his mind, a reminder that understanding how solutions actually work on site is as valuable as anything learned at a desk.

The next chapter for both is already mapped out. Leighton is working towards becoming a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with the RICS. Alex is targeting IEng status with the ICE, with his End Point Assessment planned for around twelve months’ time and a longer-term eye on Chartered Engineer status beyond that.

Commenting on the graduate success, Managing Director Andrew Cotton said: “Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd is proud of what both Leighton and Alex have achieved. Their stories are a demonstration of what the apprenticeship route can deliver, not just for the individuals, but for the businesses that invest in them. Congratulations to you both.”
