⚠️ A domain renewal email worth knowing about .
This week we’ve been investigating an email that one of our clients received regarding the renewal of their business domain.
At first glance, everything looked legitimate. The red flag for this client was merely that we, The Operations Hub, manage their domain renewal so an email demand from a different company was unusual.
The email included the correct company name, website address and business email, quoted a renewal date and attached what appeared to be a professional invoice.
After looking into it further, we found that the payment wasn’t actually for renewing the domain. It was for a “domain renewal notification service”, and there are now numerous reports from businesses across the UK receiving almost identical emails.
It’s a good reminder that not every suspicious email contains spelling mistakes or comes from an obviously fake sender. Many now look polished, include genuine information about your business and ask for an amount that seems entirely reasonable.
If your business receives an unexpected invoice relating to your website, domain, Microsoft 365 or any other IT service, take a moment to verify it before making payment. A quick check with your usual provider can save a lot of time and money.
And if you’re one of our clients, just send it over to us first. We’d much rather spend five minutes checking an email than see you lose money to one that looked convincing.
Stay cautious and, if in doubt, ask!
