There are hundreds of network switches on the site. For most people, that's hundreds too many to sort through by hand.

So we built the Express Switch Finder to do the narrowing for you. Set what actually matters: port count, speed, PoE, managed or unmanaged. It filters the whole range down to the switches that fit instantly. No trawling through spec sheets, no guessing which one's overkill.

It’s the same shortcut we’d use ourselves, so we put it on the page.

You upgraded to the latest Wi-Fi, expected a noticeable jump, and got... roughly what you had before.

New wireless kit is only ever as fast as the thing it plugs into. In most offices, that's a network switch that's possibly several years older and a lot slower, which is holding everything back. So the new gear ends up performing like the old gear, and the Wi-Fi gets the blame it doesn't deserve.

A modern Wi-Fi 7 access point on an older gigabit switch leaves most of its speed unused.

The fix is a multi-gig switch: one built to keep pace with newer Wi-Fi. Better still, it works with the network cabling you've almost certainly already got, so it's usually a straight swap rather than a rewiring job. If your faster Wi-Fi hasn't felt faster, this is where the speed has been hiding.

Sizing a PDU is simpler than the spec sheet makes it look. It comes down to three things:

Draw: add up what every device pulls, using the rated figure on the label rather than idle

Supply: single-phase suits most UK racks (usually a 16A or 32A unit); three-phase comes in when the load climbs

Headroom: load to around 80% and keep the top fifth in reserve, so a startup surge or the next switch has somewhere to go

Our latest blog walks through the full calculation, from working out your draw to matching the right PDU: https://www.comms-express.com/blog/calculate-right-server/

We all start summer with a plan to sort the network. Then we all hit September with only half of it done.

Here are five jobs worth finishing before everyone is back and the network is under full load again.

In many small offices, the "server room" is a cupboard with the door propped open and a desk fan wedged in the gap. Anyone who walks past can reach the kit that runs the entire business.

You don't need a rebuild to fix it.

A UK-made, lockable wall-mounted data cabinet at around £150 gets your switch, router, and NAS off the shelf, behind a locked glass door, and up off the floor. Lockable side panels stop casual tampering, and the ventilated design keeps everything cool while it's shut away.

Exposed becomes secured, for about the price of the kit you're leaving on show.

A law firm can encrypt every email, lock down every login, and still leave its client data sitting in an unlocked cupboard at the back of their office.

Confidentiality is a professional obligation for law firms, and it doesn't stop at the firewall. The server, switch, and NAS holding case files, client records, and correspondence are physical objects. If anyone walking past can reach them, that's a gap in the same duty of confidentiality the digital side takes so seriously.

Physical access control is the quiet half of data protection. A lockable data cabinet is the simplest fix there is: a lockable glass front door and lockable side panels that decide exactly who can get to the hardware, sized to fit a comms room, cupboard, or under-stairs space.

Outages are slowly becoming less common, but roughly one in ten still cause serious or severe disruption.

An overloaded circuit is one of the more avoidable ways to cause one.

Size your PDU to what the rack actually draws, leave sensible headroom, and you sidestep both the tripped breaker that drops everything and the money wasted on capacity you'll never use.

Here's how to work it out before you buy: vhttps://www.comms-express.com/blog/calculate-right-server/
