Taking time out to create some quick sketches. Using only what I have, a few fine liners. Sitting in the shade by the pool, whilst being splashed, trying to fill a few pages. Making marks, just playing, exploring and experimenting!

Really must do more of this!

Behind the scenes...

My notebooks, sketches and scraps of paper. Paint tests and colour swatches that my clients rarely ever see.

My projects may start out a bit higgledy-piggledy, but really it’s just my organised chaos.

The ideas don’t arrive fully formed. They’re mini sketches, pen marks on paper, biro doodles on lined notepads, lists of words, random thoughts, bubble diagrams and colour combinations. It’s making connections by going on a journey that eventually sparks the main ideas.

Clients rarely get to see this part of the process. They see the finished prospectus, the brand or the illustration, but not all the thinking, researching, sketching and doodling that happens beforehand.

It’s one of my favourite parts of a project. I’ve always loved the research side, as far back to when I attended college.

Exploring, experimenting and trying different ideas to find the strongest solution. Each project teaches something new and can often nudge me a little outside my comfort zone too.

I love working on school brochures, prospectuses and other marketing materials and one of my favourite projects to date for Bishop's Stortford College was creating an illustration for their Lunar New Year postcard.

So here’s a glimpse behind the scenes, from early sketches and paint tests through to the finished framed illustration, final postcard and testimonial.

This piece was inspired by my 2023 watercolour painting, ‘Festival of Balloons’.

The story behind it:

As a child growing up in the 80s, I loved attending my local carnival in Brightlingsea. The parade would pass the bottom of our road before finishing on the recreation ground.

One of my favourite activities was buying a balloon with a numbered tag attached, along with contact details.

Once all the balloons had been sold, they would be released into the sky, hopefully travelling far enough for someone to find one and get in touch with the organiser.

The balloon that travelled the furthest would win a prize.

Today, while it would still be fun to do this, the impact on the environment is simply too great.

Instead, by painting balloons with positive messages, I hope to spread a little fun and happiness along Chelmsford High Street.

You can find my rainbow balloons in the window of which is on the route of the Chelmsford Pride march this month. 🌈 🎈🎈🎈

Fab location and I loved painting this window mural, having learnt so much from last months piece and being able to put that into action so soon!

Awards are wonderful, but sometimes it’s the conversations behind them that mean the most.

Last night I attended the Chelmsford Bid Business Awards held

The gallery, at the that I am part of, was nominated for three awards this year!

• Exceptional Customer Service
• Small Indie Retailer
• Corporate Social responsibility Business

We won Exceptional Customer Service again!!! It’s the third year in a row we’ve won an award and we’re absolutely thrilled! But thats not all…drum roll…we also won the award for Corporate Social Responsibility!

You can imagine the roar that went up! Thirteen of the team went up to collect the award. So proud to be part of Artists at the Meadows and work alongside eighteen wonderful creatives who inspire and support each other daily.

Now, you may or may not have seen my post from last year when we won, but what made that evening even more special, was that a nominee from another business came up to tell me how well deserved the award was.

The reason? She had visited the gallery with her young son and I was there painting. I stopped and took the time to chat with them about the gallery and what I was working on, which she really appreciated and remembered.

That moment meant the world and made that award mean so much more.

Well, that lovely lady was back at the awards last night and came over, gave me a hug and told us how much she still loves visiting our gallery and what a special place it is.

Whilst awards recognise what you’ve achieved, it’s moments like that which remind you why you do it.

So, thank you to everyone who visits and supports Artists at the Meadows. Alongside the artists, you are the reason our gallery is such a special place to be.

I’ll be honest…

I’d never painted a window mural before, so I was really excited to be asked to create one for in conjunction with the Youth Project.

The design was inspired by the youth group’s skateboard artwork, which was displayed on the railings by the river during the event.

The last time I painted at this scale was back at college when I worked on stage sets and children’s bedroom murals, so it’s been a while.

I have to admit, I was nervous and on the day I was running on adrenaline, bouncing around trying to get everything done.

I’m also grateful for the company of who was painting the window beside me. She shared a few tips throughout the day and we ended up linking some of our colours, inspired by similar skateboard designs. Even though our windows were very different, there was a subtle thread of colour connecting them.

It was a bit more physically demanding than I expected. I had more DOMS the next day than after my 100km last year!

I’m really glad I did it though. It opened my eyes to different ways of working creatively and I’ve taken a lot from the experience.

Would I do it again? Absolutely.

So here’s the finished result, which I’m really happy to finally share.

A recent Guardian headline caught my attention. It highlighted research suggesting that engaging with arts and culture may be linked to a slower pace of biological ageing.

The study found that activities like visiting galleries, painting, singing and other creative practices were associated with many health benefits, including mental health. Even regular monthly engagement appeared to make a difference.

Many of us working in the arts already understand this. Creativity is grounding. It slows us down in a good way. It helps us focus, breathe and be present. It does not require perfection, just willingness to play, explore and experiment.

This ties in nicely as, after a short break, I am looking to bring back my abstract watercolour workshops to Chelmsford.
