Meta plans to lay off thousands of staff in an attempt to cut back spending so their data centres can handle AI workloads. They even went as far as terminating their $300 million contract to expand their data centre in Denmark, construction of which had already begun.

AI is considered a higher-priority growth area for Meta as they plan to create a more streamlined organisation.

Google's idea of using less electricity for cooling is to use more water!

Their data centre in Oregon has been using a third of the city’s water supply for cooling purposes. This amounts to around 355 million gallons of water, and after the tax breaks Google has been granted to operate their data centre in the city, they are now under scrutiny for becoming a ‘water vampire’!

Meta plans to decarbonise its data centres by using renewable energy sources, ahead of recent net-zero targets.

BP will be selling power to Meta via a solar farm currently under construction in Ohio. This is just one of many steps data centre owners and managers are taking to counteract and reduce their carbon footprint.

Many tech giants have now committed to 100% renewable targets:

• Apple and Google aim to be carbon neutral by 2030 by reducing and offsetting their carbon emissions.

• Microsoft has been carbon neutral for a while now but their new goal is to be carbon negative with over 60% of their data centres operating on exclusively renewable energy in 2021. They have also pledged to remove all carbon their company has created since 1975, possibly through methods such as tree planting.

• Amazon is the largest cloud computing provider yet is also ahead of their target of using 100% renewable energy by 2030 and is building three new wind farms around the world.
