As a business analyst, it's important that before you begin any project, you understand what the scope of the project is. By defining the scope, you help all stakeholders to be very clear on exactly what is going to be delivered and most importantly, what will not be delivered. Once your scope is defined, you are then able to plan your business analysis activity and also elicit your requirements.

Scope is simply defining what the project will deliver.

When you join a new organisation or project as a business analyst, it's important to start adding value as soon as possible.
The first thing you'll need to do is to understand the business need. Among other things, some of the questions you need to ask are:
- What problem is the business facing?
- What is causing the problem?
- What needs to be done to address the problem?

Usually, you'll find some documents that will provide you with the background information you need to understand the business situation.

You'll also need to speak to the business users. As they work in the environment, they'll be able to describe the challenges they're facing in relation to the business problem you're there to help them solve.

In order to identify the right business users to speak to, you'll need to identify the right stakeholders.

We'll talk about stakeholders in our next post.
